What started as a fun way to reward students has become another tool for recognizing positive behavior, celebrating accomplishments, and creating moments of joy throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nWe have used the Ninja Slushie machine as part of our PBIS incentives, classroom rewards, and special student celebrations. Students can earn opportunities to enjoy a slushie by demonstrating positive behaviors, meeting expectations, showing growth, and making good choices. It has also provided a fun option for students who have earned a well-deserved break or recognition for their hard work\r\n\r\nThe impact goes beyond the slushies themselves. The machine has helped us reinforce the idea that positive choices, perseverance, responsibility, and kindness matter. It has become part of creating a school culture where students know that adults are looking for opportunities to recognize them for doing well—not just correcting them when something goes wrong.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, we plan to continue incorporating the Ninja Slushie machine into our PBIS celebrations, student incentives, classroom rewards, and special events. These are items that students need every single day, and having consistent access removed a lot of barriers that previously slowed down learning. Instead of stopping rehearsal due to broken reeds or dry instruments, students were able to stay engaged and focused on making music.\r\n\r\nOne specific moment that stood out was during our preparation for Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE). Because students had the proper supplies, we were able to rehearse more efficiently and refine our sound at a much higher level. That preparation paid off—our band earned an overall Superior rating, which was a huge accomplishment for our program.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited but also relieved. Many of them don't always have access to these items at home, so knowing they had what they needed in class gave them confidence. It also created a stronger sense of responsibility and pride in their instruments and performance.\r\n\r\nWe also recently wrapped up our Spring Concert, and thanks to these resources, we were able to include even more students in the performance. The practice pads helped our percussionists build their skills, while tuners and supplies supported our wind players in developing better tone and accuracy.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our next steps are to continue strengthening fundamentals and preparing students for more advanced music and performance opportunities. Usually when a kid breaks a reed and has to ask for a new one, I have to charge for it so we can buy more reeds without it taking money from the instrument repair budget. The year this was funded, I could just hand a kid a reed and not make them anxious about their ability to pay for the reed. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, when mallets would eventually break, I could just pull a new pair out from my office and hand them to a responsible kid. That's the biggest impact - those mallets can cost more than $40 for the student-line brands. And for my students who joined Chinese class this year, those YCT excersise books will help them to master the basics while they try to catch up with the rest of the class.
