It is also a wonderful way to introduce students to new vocabulary in a way that feels digestible. They had such a great time building with the legos and learning about the engineering feat that is building a bridge. They were so excited every time we worked on this project and it really brought out their creativity!\r\n\r\nUnfortunately, the clay ended up being a bit too difficult to work with for this project, so we used cardboard instead. We will be using the clay for projects in the future. Specifically, to talk about force and motion as well as states of matter. We began by having each student choose a character and build it by following step-by-step instructions. This connected directly to our math unit on 3D shapes, and students were especially excited to work with cubes as they constructed their characters. After building, students named their characters, collaborated with their peers to create a setting, and developed simple scripts using story elements.\r\n\r\nUsing coding mats, students then programmed their robots to act out their stories and complete tasks. This gave every student the opportunity to actively participate while exploring commands and sequencing in a meaningful context.\r\n\r\nThroughout the project, students practiced a wide range of skills, including understanding left and right, counting, following multi-step directions, and applying vocabulary such as verbs and setting. Beyond academic skills, the project fostered independence, creativity, and strong collaboration as students worked together and shared ideas.\r\n\r\nI was especially impressed by how many learning areas this experience supported simultaneously. As I shared how we would use each item, their excitement grew! Especially when they saw the magnetic tiles \r\nand magnetic shapes! We immediately put our new materials to work.\r\n\r\nUsing the clay, students designed and built their own wind vanes. They are quickly becoming little meteorologists in the making!
