The variety of engaging stories, nonfiction articles, plays, poems, and paired texts gives students opportunities to experience many different types of reading throughout the year. Because the topics are interesting and age-appropriate, students are often excited to read and eager to discuss what they have learned.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest benefits of Storyworks has been the growth I have seen in my students' reading comprehension. The texts encourage students to identify main ideas, determine important details, make inferences, compare information across texts, and support their answers with evidence. Students are also exposed to new vocabulary in meaningful contexts, which helps strengthen both their reading and writing skills. The accompanying questions and activities allow students to practice these skills repeatedly while still working with fresh and interesting material.\r\n\r\nStoryworks has also helped build confidence in my developing readers. The combination of high-interest topics, accessible text features, photographs, illustrations, and different genres provides multiple ways for students to connect with what they are reading. Students who may not normally choose to read independently often become interested in a Storyworks article because the subject captures their attention. This has helped create more meaningful classroom conversations and has encouraged students to share their ideas and opinions about what they read.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, Storyworks has helped my students see reading as more than simply completing an assignment. It has encouraged curiosity about history, science, current events, people, and the world around them. As their reading skills have improved, so has their willingness to take on more challenging texts.
