This story is one of the best tools we have for exploring important literary elements like plot, setting, characterization, and figurative language. With their own copies, students can really make the book their own. It's one thing to read a story on a screen or from a shared copy, but having a physical book they can flip through makes a huge difference in how they connect to the material.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a team effort. We break the story into smaller parts so students can read closely and actually talk about what's going on. These eighth graders love a good mystery, and The Yellow Wallpaper gives them just enough suspense to keep the conversations going. We pause often to discuss how the narrator changes, what certain symbols might mean, and how the author creates a mood that feels so intense. The students get excited to share their ideas and challenge each other's thinking.\r\n\r\nA few students have even told me they really relate to the narrator. They say they understand how it feels to be overwhelmed or misunderstood, and it's opened up some powerful conversations about stress, identity, and feeling seen. These are the kinds of moments that stick with them and help turn reading into something meaningful.
