My kindergarteners were so excited to see all of the new equipment, and it has been so much fun watching them find new ways to play, work together, and include their friends. These materials are shared among all of our kindergarten students, so we have seen students across classrooms teaching their friends how to throw the frisbees, conversations about inviting others to join ball games, and circles of catch popping up all over the field. We have even seen friendships being made across classrooms as students toss the football back and forth to each other, with those friendships growing into other games that don't even require playground equipment.\r\n\r\nThe best part has been seeing and hearing the social strategies we have been practicing in class come to life during recess. Students are using their words, taking turns, inviting others to play, working through problems, encouraging their friends, and learning how to be good teammates. We definitely don't get it right every time, but those moments are some of the best learning opportunities because they give our students a chance to practice these skills in real situations. It has been especially meaningful to see students from different kindergarten classrooms connecting and building friendships because of these shared materials.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the year, we will keep building on these skills and encouraging our students to invite others in, solve problems together, and build friendships across classrooms.
