They truly enjoyed their experience with our Owl Pellet lab that is directly connected to our Science standards. These standards teach students about food chains in the natural world. Specifically students are to recognize that when animals eat plants or other animals, the energy stored in the food source is passed to them. Students are able to trace the flow of energy from the Sun as it is transferred along the food chain through the producers (the plants)to the consumers (anything that eats). \r\nIn this lab students are also making connections to the impact that humans have on the environment. Habitat destruction is the main concern for these majestic creatures. Students understand that owls are helpful to the public, especially farmers. They are a natural rodent exterminator! \r\nIn all students found evidence of 174 field mice, 66 pocket gophers, 38 shrews, 77 rats, 45 moles, and 9 birds in the pellets. Science can be amazing and gross at the same time. Students enjoyed your gift.
