Your generosity gave my students something incredibly valuable: the opportunity to experience reading as readers, not simply as students completing an assignment or tasks with certain excerpts. Students were able to choose from the new books and form book clubs with classmates who were excited to read the same story. I facilitated their discussions, but much of the thinking belonged to them. Together, they talked about characters and their motivations, identified themes, summarized important events, reread sections for evidence, practiced fluent reading, and responded to their books through writing. I used our state standards and recommended book lists to guide the skills we explored with each text, so the work was academically purposeful while still feeling authentic and meaningful to the kids.\r\n\r\nThe difference in motivation was remarkable, particularly for some of my striving readers. They loved that they were reading \"real books\" with their peers, and the conversations that grew out of those books gave them a reason to read closely and keep going. Students who might have been hesitant during traditional reading instruction became invested in finding out what happened next, sharing an opinion, or proving an idea to their book club. Having a copy of the book in their own hands also meant they could follow along, reread, notice details, and participate as an equal member of the group.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these experiences were part of a year of tremendous growth for the students I served. Of 14 students whose beginning and end-of-year scores I tracked, 13 increased their national percentile ranking, with some making extraordinary gains. For example, from the 14th to the 75th percentile, the 30th to the 68th, and the 38th to the 74th. Every student increased by at least one achievement level, and some grew by as many as three. Many factors contributed to that progress, but these books became an important part of the meaningful, motivating literacy practice that helped make that growth possible. I firmly believing that instilling a love for reading creates lifelong learners, and strongly impacts literacy for the long haul. We received these items towards the end of the year but in time for state testing. Students were very much appreciative of the mints as they help them to stay alert while working hard to show what they know. Students also benefited from the noise canceling headphones to zone in to the task at hand and zone out to all others - one student forgot that they were in the room with others. Students earn Lancer Loot through out the day for a variety of behaviors. Following directions in class, good cafeteria behavior, completing assignments and homework, making good choices campus wide and being a good friend are only a few of the reasons students are rewarded!\r\n\r\nThe students are always ecstatic when they walk into the prize store! It is very exciting for them to see what items are available for them to buy! It is always fun to watch them counting their Loot. They have to decide what to buy and how much Loot that they will have left over. The older students sometimes put their money together to buy a more expensive item for their class. Some students even save their Loot to purchase a higher price item the next month.\r\n\r\nLakeview students know that the PBS Prize Store happens at the end of each month.
