These hands-on tools have completely changed the way my students think about numbers. We've been using them daily during math lessons to really focus on place value and even broadening the benchmark to include practice with expanded form, expanded notation, and determining values that are 10 times or 1/10 of. \r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the flip boards, their excitement was contagious- they love anything that is tangible and they can control as opposed to simple paper and pencil. Strengthening their fine motor skills by pairing up each cone also supports pencil control when it's time to practice writing numbers.\r\n\r\nThe apple tree counting box has quickly become a classroom favorite! It's so loved that we even had to have a class discussion about keeping the apples at school. My students enjoy counting and matching the apples to the mats, which reinforces one-to-one correspondence and strengthens their voice-to-number matching for accurate counting.\r\n\r\nThe math activity center has been especially helpful during small groups. When we build numbers together, we discuss their lines and curves before practicing how to write them.
