It has been a long-time goal of mine to have this book in my classroom. I've tried for multiple years to get the district to supply the funds for this, but it hasn't worked out. The Martian perfectly covers so many of the topics that I cover in my 7th grade science unit. It's awesome to be able to point out how the things we learn can be used to problem solve, and it's even better when the students can point it out themselves!\r\n\r\nMy students didn't share my enthusiasm of having a book to read in science (I got a lot of \"This is science, Mr. Yindra, not reading\". However, as a whole, I think the majority of the students changed their opinion as the year went on. Many students claimed they hadn't read a full chapter book before and, while it was difficult, that they enjoyed it overall. There were some students who said they didn't enjoy Sci-Fi before but enjoyed it and will be reading Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary over the summer.\r\n\r\nOur goal was to read a chapter a week, with some weeks covering two chapters. Many students ended up reading ahead because they just had to know what happened next. We finished the book recently and students are very excited to watch the movie after our final exam to see how it stacks up against the book. \r\n\r\nThank you again so much for making this a reality for my classroom. Reading is such an important skill and I loved having the opportunity to tie it into my classroom content. I look forward to improving my pacing and lesson plans surrounding the book for next year!","fullyFundedDate":1762190366802,"projectUrl":"project/reading-our-way-to-mars-science-through/9765963/","projectTitle":"Reading Our Way to Mars: Science Through Storytelling!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Yindra","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3262382_orig.jpg?crop=2477,2477,x0,y322&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758912655799","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3262382"},{"teacherId":4595763,"projectId":9508775,"letterContent":"The donation of the phone safety package has had a very positive impact on the classroom environment. The wall-mounted phone holder provides a consistent and visible place for students to store their phones, helping to reduce distractions and increase focus during instruction. The secure box with keys ensures that any student who forgets to pick up their phone after school has a safe and organized way to retrieve it, promoting responsibility and peace of mind for both students and staff. In addition, the rug donated for silent reading has created a comfortable and welcoming space that encourages students to read quietly without distractions. Together, these donations have significantly improved classroom organization, student accountability, and overall learning engagement.","fullyFundedDate":1756122037845,"projectUrl":"project/phone-free-learning-reading-circle-spa/9508775/","projectTitle":"Phone-Free Learning & Reading Circle Space","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Olson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4595763_orig.jpg?crop=1080,1080,x0,y215&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724599789728","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4595763"},{"teacherId":9742739,"projectId":9545909,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for the generous donation this year. Because of you we were able to share real life science with our 6th grade students. The students were able to monitor and track their heart rates during the course of a lab thanks to the pulse oximeters we received. This gives our students a real-life view of how science is working in their day to day lives. These resources will be used again every year for this exciting lab, so thank you again and again! \r\n\r\nIn our lab, students were required to monitor and record their heart rate before, during, and after a brief period of exercise. The donation of the pulse oximeters was key to the success of this lab experiment. Students used the oximeters to monitor and track their heart rate, record the data, and then graph the data to show evidence of how their body reacts to stimuli and maintains homeostasis to keep the body balanced.\r\n\r\nGiving students the ability to physically do science experiments is paramount in their learning and, I believe, helps the information stick better than a reading assignment or paperwork.
