Among the students I support is one remarkable classroom of eight learners whom I consider my most complex communicators. Each of these students navigates significant challenges related to motor planning, sensory regulation, and expressive language. Despite these obstacles, they demonstrate extraordinary persistence and determination each day as they work to make their complex bodies do hard things.\r\nFor many of these students, communication is a journey that requires alternative pathways. Some are beginning to explore high tech AAC systems, while others are learning to use alternative access methods such as head switches, foot switches, and single‑message devices. For these learners, communication is not merely the exchange of words - it is the key to connection, autonomy, and joy.\r\nThe Little Step-by-Step Communicators have been an invaluable asset in supporting these students as they build foundational language and participation skills. These devices allow for repeated practice, clear auditory feedback, and consistent modeling-elements that are essential for students who are developing switch access or who rely on auditory cues paired with motor actions. They enable students to participate meaningfully in classroom routines, social interactions, and academic and leisure activities.\r\nReceiving this grant has made a tremendous difference. With access to these communicators, each of the eight students has been able to engage in communication that is tailored to their individual needs. Since the devices were introduced, students have demonstrated increased social participation with both peers and adults, greater active engagement during academic tasks, and more frequent opportunities to express themselves independently. Most importantly, they are experiencing the confidence and joy that come from having their voices heard.\r\nThis grant has provided tools that truly honor the individuality, dignity, and potential of each student. Thank you for supporting their growth and empowering them to connect with the world around them.","fullyFundedDate":1763905251158,"projectUrl":"project/every-step-counts-building-language-for/9876082/","projectTitle":"Every Step Counts: Building Language for Complex Communicators","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Adkins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8931056"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_99512","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":953,"numTeachers":65,"percentFrplEligible":35,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":28,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.3,"schoolId":99512,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Connerton Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Connerton Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/pasco-county-school-district/connerton-elementary-school/99512"}
