Flexible seating has changed more than where my students sit—it has changed how they use our classroom and how comfortable they feel while learning.\r\nMy Art and Critical Thinking classroom serves approximately 140 middle school students throughout the day. My students come in different sizes, have different learning needs, and work best in different ways. The flexible seating gives them something a traditional classroom chair cannot always provide: choice.\r\nStudents now have places where they can settle in with a book, work independently, collaborate with classmates, participate in discussions, brainstorm ideas, and complete assignments in a way that feels comfortable to them. The flexible seats have quickly become spaces where students genuinely want to work. I have watched students move from a traditional chair to flexible seating, open their books, get comfortable, and become completely engaged in what they are doing.\r\nThe seating has also helped me use our classroom space more effectively. Instead of every learning experience being centered around a desk or table, students can spread into different areas of the room. This is especially valuable in Art and Critical Thinking, where learning often requires movement, collaboration, discussion, creativity, and independent reflection.\r\nWhat means the most to me is seeing students of different sizes comfortably using the seating. That was one of the biggest reasons I created this project. I wanted my classroom to communicate to every student, \"There is a place here for you.\"\r\nThese photographs show exactly what your support has made possible—students reading, thinking, working together, and learning comfortably.\r\nThank you for helping me create a classroom that gives my students room to think, freedom to create, and a comfortable place to belong. It became another opportunity for me to show students that they are seen, supported, and surrounded by people who believe in their future.\r\nThe backpacks provided through this project were filled with essential school supplies so students could begin the school year prepared and confident. Having these resources available has improved our school environment because when a student comes to me needing something, I can help remove that immediate barrier. Instead of worrying about not having the right supplies, students can focus on learning, participating, creating, and simply being students.\r\nThis project is especially meaningful to me because I have seen firsthand how one small gesture can have an impact long after a student leaves your classroom.\r\nIn 2022, I had a sixth-grade student who struggled in my class. I did something for her that, at the time, seemed like a simple gesture. I never imagined that years later I would learn how much that moment meant to her.\r\nThis year, while attending sixth-grade orientation with her younger brother, she came looking for me. She is now a junior in high school and is doing extremely well. She told me she had wanted to find me so she could thank me for the impact I had on her life.\r\nWhat touched me even more was the reason she wanted her younger brother to meet me. She and her mother wanted him to know that if he ever needed anything, he should find Ms. Lay because she would make it happen for him.\r\nThat moment brought everything full circle for me.\r\nSometimes we never get to see what happens after we plant a seed in a child's life. I was fortunate enough to see one of mine years later.\r\nThat experience is part of the heart behind this project. A backpack may look like a simple school item, but to a child who needs it, it can communicate something much greater:\r\nYou are seen.\r\nYou are supported.\r\nYou belong here.\r\nSomeone believes in what you can become.\r\nMy donors helped me continue planting those seeds. These backpacks weren't simply filled with notebooks, pencils, folders, and school supplies. Seeing the braiding supplies, learning materials, and practice tools created an excitement that was contagious. Their smiles, curiosity, and eagerness to begin reminded me why creating this program was so important.\r\nOne of the most rewarding moments was watching the students interact with one another while exploring the materials. They asked thoughtful questions, encouraged each other, and eagerly shared the hairstyles they hope to learn. The room quickly filled with laughter, conversation, and excitement as they realized they were about to begin learning a brand-new skill together.\r\nThroughout our first lesson, students were introduced to the basic tools of braiding, healthy hair care practices, and the importance of sanitation and professionalism. Before they ever picked up a comb to braid, they were already learning that caring for someone's hair begins with caring for the person.\r\nAs the week continues, students will build on these foundations by learning how to create box braids, cornrows, and feed-in braids while also learning proper client care, healthy hair maintenance, and the value of patience, practice, and perseverance.\r\nWhat makes this program so special is that it goes beyond teaching braiding techniques. It is helping students build confidence, communicate with one another, solve problems, and discover talents they may never have realized they possessed. Every lesson is designed to remind them that growth comes through practice and that every small success deserves to be celebrated.\r\nBecause of your generosity, these students are gaining skills that extend far beyond the classroom. For some, this experience may become a lifelong hobby. For others, it may become the beginning of an entrepreneurial journey or future career.
