Teacher used Guided Instruction to navigate through the text. We used the novel and the audio on You Tube to help get through the text in its entirety. While reading, students answered reading comprehension questions. In addition, analytical questions were posed to students. It was a joy hearing students chuckle or laugh during parts of the novel they found to be funny. Trevor Noah does a marvelous job allowing youngsters to experience life as a young man through his lens. Trevor is not overly righteous or perfect in the novel, he presents himself as a teen who had ups and downs and was simply trying to maneuver through life.\r\n\r\nExposing students to words will help increase their lexile reading scores. Not only did students answer comprehension and analytical questions, they also had to provide context as to where they found support for their answer in the text. Thus, students included page numbers where the answers could be found. When asked after reading the novel, what could I have done differently to better engage students, they replied nothing. All in all, this experience exceeded my expectations and I look forward to using the class set to teach the same content next year.","fullyFundedDate":1736990609211,"projectUrl":"project/noah-lot-born-a-crime/8994957/","projectTitle":"Noah-Lot: Born A Crime","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. M. While it was originally created to encourage independent reading, it has naturally grown into what students now call the \"Calm Corner.\" My students use the space to read, journal, or take a short break when they need to reset. It's also become a place where students from other classes stop by to borrow books or take a mindful moment before returning to their day.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, they were excited and eager to explore the books and comfortable seating. It created an immediate sense of ownership and pride in the space. Moving forward, my students are working on a book review wall where they'll write short reflections or recommendations for their classmates. We also plan to create a set of affirmation cards and reflection prompts that any student in the school can use when visiting the Calm Corner. The space has truly become a shared resource for literacy, connection, and care within our classroom community.","fullyFundedDate":1734547187296,"projectUrl":"project/taking-a-page-out-of-my-students-book/8533293/","projectTitle":"Taking A Page Out Of My Students' Book","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Wilson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9601178_orig.jpg?crop=772,772,x667,y62&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1721919321410","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/misswilson24"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46795","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":705,"numTeachers":65,"percentFrplEligible":71,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":69,"percentWhite":6,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":19,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"10.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":79.6,"schoolId":46795,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Howell L Watkins Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Howell L Watkins Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/palm-beach-county-public-schools/howell-l-watkins-middle-school/46795"}
