This is the driving philosophy behind my time as an elementary school music teacher. With your donation that helped bring us stands for barred instruments, I can confidently say that we have acheived this goal. Your donation made these instruments not only easier to move around for classes and rehearsals, but they made the instruments more playable for more children. The kids are also playing with better technique, and while most of them will not play mallets professionally, playing with improved technique allows them to keep away from injuries and physically feel better while they are playing music. This is an amazing gift we have been given, and I know we will not take it for granted. \r\n\r\nSince your amazing donation, I can confidently say that over 80% of our entire school population (every grade level except for kindergarten) has made use of these instruments stands. They make the instruments easier particularly for the younger students, who are still developing their fine motor skills. You have truly given a gift that all of our students can enjoy, and that will not be forgotten. Thank you so much, and I hope you are able to take beautiful music with you wherever you go.","fullyFundedDate":1765498747676,"projectUrl":"project/raising-the-barred-instruments/9950370/","projectTitle":"Raising the Bar(red Instruments)!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Langerholc","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp827028_orig.jpg?crop=750,750,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763151865426","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/langerholc"},{"teacherId":827028,"projectId":9895977,"letterContent":"Our students have gone recorder mad this year! Now that we have everybody playing recorders, we have been plowing through lessons, learning new notes and new songs, improvising, and having a great time. All of our students are now learning fine motor skills, increased dexterity in their fingers, and controlled breathing, which are wonderful skills that have multiple benefits far beyond just playing music. Music does not just teach humanity and creativity, but when we get into the weeds and play instruments like the recorder, it assists tremendously with skill development. Very few other curricular classes work with fine motor development and related skills at the elementary school level, so your donation has helped make this a reality for all of our students here at Sand Lake Elementary. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, your donation has made it so that recorder is not just an optional thing to learn, but something all students can participate in. This helps to bring equitable music education to every student at our school and assists in leveling the skill development playing field. Although we have a lot of advantages here, there are still many students who have great needs. As you know, a good deal of federal and state funding is drying up for music education, and although we are well supported in Orange County Public Schools, it becomes hard for one district alone to buck the patterns within a larger system. Our kids who have not played recorder before have been overjoyed to get their own, and some of them spend spare time in class hugging their recorders. Do not trust people who talk about the recorder as though it is not beneficial to a child's education – they are so wrong. These kids are so happy to be playing their recorders. Your donations help to ensure we can provide continual, equitable services for all of our students at this school, and that means more than you know. \r\n\r\nI have been teaching here at SLES for three years. I started my career teaching middle school band, which had its own challenges, but after 12 years of being the band director, I wanted to make a change. I wanted to teach where we ensured every kid had access to music education, not just the ones who selected band as their elective. Teaching elementary school has given me the opportunity to teach every student the fundamentals (and the fun!) of music, and your donation has propped that up, allowing every third and fourth grade student here at SLES to play recorder. I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and I hope that you have music in yours.","fullyFundedDate":1764355737522,"projectUrl":"project/root-tootin-good-time-with-recorders/9895977/","projectTitle":"Root-Tootin' Good Time with Recorders!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Langerholc","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp827028_orig.jpg?crop=750,750,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763151865426","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/langerholc"},{"teacherId":9399411,"projectId":9743108,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity in helping create lasting experiences for my students. It is a full color magazine type resource that has several articles that are kid-friendly, and timely with current events. We are using this resource as part of our Social Studies curriculum. Each week the students read the Scholastic News (cover to cover) and complete a quiz that is on the back of the magazine. It requires students to go back to the text and look for the answers to the questions. Not all questions are as simple as finding a word definition or answering a yes or no question. Students are often given multiple choice questions that require them to go back and physically identify or eliminate certain answers.\r\n\r\nOne thing that we have added to our lesson plans this year is to use the Scholastic News to help students identify text features, text structures, themes, etc. This make using Scholastic News not only a social studies resource based on content, but an ELA resource as we analyze the texts from an ELA point of view. Students work together in small groups to complete the Scholastic News and I try to get them graded before the end of the week. Then, when there are errors, I give them back to students to correct their work so that they are learning from their mistakes. Over time, they get better at completing the quiz because they are learning to analyze the text more closely, while they are learning about current events.\r\n\r\nThank you again for providing this engaging and fun resource.
