We would like to incorporate a Cricut machine into our classroom to incorporate learning with creativity and technology. A major initiative at our school this year is to promote STEAM learning. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. By attaching the Cricut Machine to a computer or mobile device, students can design and produce their projects with technology. The Cricut Machine will cut out their design into templates ready for them to assemble into an actual product. Science, math, social studies, and reading come to life as students make models to help their understanding of key concepts. The thousands of shapes, fonts, and images Cricut offers can be useful in helping them learn concepts such as geometry, multiplication and division, map skills and geography, bookmaking, plants and animals, cursive, literacy games and activities, etc in a fun, hands-on and creative way. Students can use the machine to create interactive bulletin boards, studying aides, flashcards, 3-D shapes and so much more. I would plan on using the materials to assist students in designing and creating class shirts for special school-wide events such as field day to help build community within our class. I spend a lot of time and money creating some of these resources for my students already but I believe they would get more enjoyment and feel more connected to their learning if they are creating and designing themselves. The Cricut machine can write with special markers as well as cut cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on vinyl. The addition of a Cricut machine to my classroom would support individualized student learning as well as provide much-needed extensions to lessons already in place. It would be a great tool for my high learners as well as a resourceful tool for helping non-English speaking children.
