The amount of graphic novels in my classroom library has now DOUBLED. Even my hesitant and struggling readers are more inclined to pick up a graphic novel when tasked with \"read a book\", and now I have enough for a whole class period!\r\n\r\nThere are so many lessons that can be taught by reading whole books. For example, we can track how a setting impacts a character's development. We can analyze how a theme develops throughout a novel. We can unpack how narration shifts change a reader's understanding of the story. With graphic novels, my students who are learning English as a second language, or struggle with learning disabilities, can glean this information more quickly by reading a novel in a more visual format.\r\n\r\nIn my classroom, reading has looked like an extension activity or an exploration activity on Fridays (First Chapter Fridays). We also tend to do an end of year novel study. But, by now having access to more graphic novels, I plan to build in a graphic novel unit in the first semester!
