I think the biggest benefit so far is that my students have realized that \"creating a kid's book is hard!\" but they are still working through it.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and wanted to dive right in. However, I knew they would need to spend time organizing and planning their pages, so I created several guides, checklists, and charts to help them think about the process. They counted pages in the blank books (and were surprised that some had a different number of pages), started out with their ideas, mapped out how many pages each one would require, and solved problems--like how DOES a 26-letter ABC alphabet book fit into 40 pages of the book? Solution: some letters get a two-page spread-- and what do I do if my handwriting is illegible or my drawing skills are not great? Work with a partner. Right now, many are still in the middle of solving problems connected to this process, but several are getting excited and generating pages.\r\n\r\nI am also learning a lot, having never done a project like this. Some of this is content-based. Admittedly, I was NOT happy to learn that there are spiders that can go underwater (From the book being created for a 5th grader, \"20 Fun Facts about Spiders\"), but there it is. I was also happy to see some of my students tackle Social-Emotional Learning topics, like the books \"Being a Military Child Can Be Hard AND Fun\" or \"Everyone Gets Angry Sometimes.\" To see my students thinking about how their words and pictures will impact younger students has brought me joy and hope for every success. Additional lessons are that my students are gaining organization and time management skills.\r\n\r\nWhile we are still two weeks away from our anticipated finish date, the gains have been wonderful. Thank you so much for your contributions.","fullyFundedDate":1782039843264,"projectUrl":"project/high-school-students-create-books-with-e/10324921/","projectTitle":"High School Students Create Books with Elementary Reading Buddies","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Drewel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10525754"},{"teacherId":562303,"projectId":10322026,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for donating reusable utensils for our school. The students are learning that small changes make huge impacts. They are starting to understand that there are items that can be washed and reused. That single use items aren't necessary. Students are taking ownership in collecting, washing, organizing, and distributing the reusable utensils. I see students correcting others when they aren't cognisant of thier reusable utensils. We lost a lot of pieces in the begining due to student neglect. Many did not understand that these were NOT throw aways. Now the students are taking time to ensure they are not accidentally throwing them out. We are looking into adding other reusable pieces to replace single use items at lunch.\r\nIt may take time but my hope is that students carry this concept over into their personal life as well. Metal straws, travel utensils, reusable water bottles can make a difference if we teach that this is important. Many high school students are overwhelmed with pressure from academics, family, work, friends, relationships, and social media. Learning how to balance their obligations and take care of themselves mentally and physically is just as important as learning how to read and write. Many teens in my area do not have resources to learn various strategies. This activity gave them the opportunity to explore mini workshops that they may never have been exposed to without investing a lot of time nor money. \r\n Students had time to reflect in the day and many commented that they felt really good about themselves after certain activities. One said \"I learned that moving around and connecting with others can help relieve stress.\" Another reflected \"That time and relaxation are precious commodities that we don't appreciate until we don't have them anymore, and are extremely important for physical and mental health. I also learned to appreciate the teacher and staff for setting this up for us.\" \r\n Next year, the student will be able to lead sessions. I also plan on inviting more community members. This year we had a yoga instructor come in a teach a yoga session. We are looking for local artists in different mediums to volunteer as well.\r\nThank you again.","fullyFundedDate":1780551159641,"projectUrl":"project/the-healing-canvas/10319246/","projectTitle":"The Healing Canvas","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Garcia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp562303_orig.jpg?crop=360,360,x279,y19&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1594840493409","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/tracyloss"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_132017","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":80,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":51,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":59,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":80.0,"schoolId":132017,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about The College of the Florida Keys Academy Public Charter High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"The College of the Florida Keys Academy Public Charter High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/monroe-county-school-district/cfk-academy-public-charter-high-school/132017"}
