My students were thrilled to see the new supplies and especially excited knowing that they would get to use them during actual investigations and STEM activities. The large Post-it easel pads have given students a place to work together, record their thinking, create models, and share their ideas with the class. The pH paper and heat lamps have allowed us to move beyond simply reading about scientific concepts and actually observe, measure, collect data, and discuss our results.\r\n\r\nOne of the resources my students are especially excited about is the bottle rocket launcher. It gives us an amazing opportunity to connect concepts such as forces, motion, pressure, energy, measurement, and engineering to an experience students will remember. Students can make predictions, collect data, analyze results, and think about how changing variables affects the performance of their rockets. These are the kinds of experiences that turn science from something students read about into something they can actually do.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue using these materials for investigations and collaborative STEM challenges where students will ask questions, test their ideas, learn from mistakes, and improve their designs. My students build legos as a way to positively pass time not on devices while with friends. Especially in this testing season; kids feel tremendous pressure in school to do work and be on task at all times. Legos allow students to be on task while having some fun. \r\nI've had students go though some very real life situations I can't begin to remedy or consult about, but legos always get the important conversations rolling. In addition to that legos are also great motivators for performance. These materials helped provide lab materials for the rest of the year and so many fun activities. There was a fun kit of 5 experiments that my STEAM club loved doing one day after school. There was also a fingerprint kit, a water testing kit and an Acid testing kit that have already and will continue to provide hands-on learning that applies classroom concepts. \r\nYour donations are super helpful for my lower-income students. Our Lego club members have found that building Legos has helped them feel encouraged to come to school, and goal based. They are building Legos are such fast paces that their requests are never-ending. I would do anything to keep my students entertained and happy at school. They really enjoyed building these Legos and getting to see the actual modeling of car engines and tires working with certain parts having specific jobs. I had members of my STEAM club put it together and they are in charge of loading the filament color they want for each project. We work after school to talk about design ideas and plan for suture projects. \r\nOur first project was to make fidget rings for students who have a tendency to fidget endlessly in class. This has made classroom time quieter for sure. We've moved on to fidget snakes and cubes and will soon try to make other things.
