Your generosity has helped us start the school year with the tools we need to create a successful learning environment for our kindergarten students with autism.\r\n\r\nAll of my students are 5- and 6-year-olds with autism, and many of them are non-verbal or have limited communication skills. Because of their unique learning needs, traditional curriculum materials often need to be adapted into more accessible formats. The copy paper you provided has allowed me to create customized lessons, visual supports, and hands-on activities that help my students better understand and retain new concepts.\r\n\r\nOne of the first projects we completed using these materials was creating individualized learning activities and visual schedules for each student. The laminated materials have held up beautifully through daily use and give students consistent visual supports throughout the day. I have already seen students become more independent when using their visual schedules to transition between activities.\r\n\r\nThe students were excited to see their classroom come together with new materials. The colorful behavior stickers quickly became a favorite! They are proudly earning stickers throughout the day and enjoy sharing their daily reports with their families. The golf pencils have also been perfect for their small hands, helping them practice early writing skills with greater confidence.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, we will continue using these resources to create differentiated lessons, communication supports, and hands-on learning activities. The lamination pouches and tape will help us build durable learning centers and visual supports that can be used all year long. Our next steps include expanding literacy and math centers, increasing opportunities for independent work, and strengthening communication skills through visual learning tools.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our classroom is better prepared to meet the diverse needs of every student. As a kindergarten autism classroom, my students have a wide range of communication, sensory, and learning needs. Many of my students are non-verbal and rely heavily on visual supports to help them understand daily routines, classroom expectations, and learning activities.\r\n\r\nThe new durable visual aids have already made a tremendous difference. Unlike the paper visuals I have created and replaced over the years, these materials are sturdy enough to withstand daily use by young learners who are still developing their communication and self-regulation skills. We use the visuals throughout the day for schedules, transitions, choice-making activities, and communication support. One special moment occurred when a student who typically struggles with transitions independently used a visual schedule to move from one activity to the next with minimal prompting. Seeing that growing independence was incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nThe chewing necklaces have also become an important support for several students. Many of my students have sensory needs that include mouthing or chewing objects. Having a safe and appropriate tool available has helped them stay focused, regulated, and engaged during lessons and small-group activities.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were eager to explore them. They immediately gravitated toward the visuals and sensory supports, and the new resources quickly became a meaningful part of our daily routine.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, we will use these materials to build communication, independence, and social skills. Our next steps include expanding students' use of visual supports during academic centers, teaching them to make more independent choices, and increasing opportunities for communication throughout the day. These resources will continue to support our students as they learn to navigate their classroom environment with greater confidence and success.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping provide the tools they need to thrive. The golf pencils have been especially helpful for my young learners, whose small hands benefit from writing tools designed for developing fine motor skills.\r\n\r\nWhen the supplies arrived, I felt an immediate sense of relief knowing that I could continue creating the materials my students need through the end of the school year. My students were excited to have their own pencils and eagerly participated in writing, tracing, and matching activities. The carpet has quickly become one of the most meaningful spaces in our classroom because it brings us together for learning, conversations, movement, and community building each day. The students immediately noticed the colors and design and were eager to gather on it for our morning meetings and group activities.\r\nSince receiving the carpet, we have used it daily during read alouds, phonics lessons, science discussions, and collaborative games. It has created a comfortable and welcoming space where students feel encouraged to participate, share ideas, and learn together. During whole group lessons, the carpet helps students stay engaged and focused while also giving them a sense of ownership and belonging within our classroom environment.\r\nOne especially special moment was watching the students independently use the carpet as a gathering space during center time to work together, read books, and discuss their ideas with one another. It has truly strengthened our classroom community and supports our child-centered learning approach.\r\nNext, students will continue using the carpet as a collaborative learning space for class discussions, storytelling activities, STEM challenges, and reflective conversations as we prepare for the transition into kindergarten. The moment they opened them, they immediately began asking questions, sharing facts they already knew, and creating imaginative stories during center time. These materials quickly became a meaningful part of our daily learning experiences.\r\nDuring science centers, the students used the animals to explore their curiosity by building habitats and discussing what each animal would need to survive. This led to rich conversations about environments, food sources, and animal characteristics. We also incorporated the animals into math by measuring their lengths, comparing sizes, and using descriptive vocabulary such as longer, shorter, bigger, and smaller.\r\nIn addition, we connected the animals to our current study on magnets. Students explored which materials were magnetic and practiced using new science vocabulary through hands-on investigations. It has been wonderful watching the children not only develop science and math skills, but also strengthen their language, critical thinking, and collaboration skills through play and exploration.\r\nAs we continue our learning, students will expand their investigations by creating more detailed habitats, documenting observations, and continuing to build scientific vocabulary through inquiry-based experiences. Many of my students are still developing their English language skills, and these hands-on materials have given them a way to learn that doesn't rely only on verbal instruction. Playdough has been especially helpful for building fine motor skills while also supporting language development, as students practice forming letters, shapes, and simple words while using new vocabulary naturally during play.\r\n\r\nThe alphabet magnets have strengthened letter recognition and early literacy skills. Students are more engaged when they can physically touch and move letters, and this has helped them connect sounds to letters in a concrete way. For ESOL students, this visual and tactile support is essential. They are more confident participating in activities, even if they are still hesitant to speak, because the magnets allow them to show understanding without language being a barrier.\r\n\r\nThe blocks have also encouraged collaboration and social interaction among students. While building together, students practice problem-solving, sharing, and communication, often using new English words in an authentic context. These materials have created an inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring, experimenting, and learning together. Overall, the donated items have supported both academic growth and social-emotional development, making a noticeable difference in my classroom.","fullyFundedDate":1757566580396,"projectUrl":"project/fun-and-learning-in-kinder/9563472/","projectTitle":"Fun and Learning in Kinder!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Louie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2910663_orig.png?crop=256,256,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754680865576","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/nathalie-louie"},{"teacherId":9566641,"projectId":8671224,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for supporting our classroom with the printer.
