While I take attendance, they are settling in and responding to the prompt.\r\n\r\n2) I can connect students to background knowledge that they already have before we open a text. This significantly improves engagement.\r\n\r\n3) I can ensure that students write more frequently. In this day and age, cheating is easier than ever. It is much more difficult to cheat in a notebook.\r\n\r\n4) I have been able to make some very personal connections. Students write things that they might not ever say outloud, and the notebooks opened that channel.\r\n\r\nSo many of my students would not have notebooks if I didn't provide them, and your generosity allows me to be generous to them. What a big impact the notebooks had on my classes this year. They put their phones down and walk into a room and sit across from a stranger to play a game. Sometimes, students attend the seminar but they have no experience or knowledge about the game, and that provides me (or their enthusiastic peers) to teach them the rules.\r\n\r\nHowever, some of the students attend and they are very competitive about winning, and so they appreciate finding a well-matched student to play against. Today, several students finished early, and they really appreciated the extra skill demanded of them by using the chess clocks. Instead of just packing up early, four different players made use of every minute of the period to play right up to the bell, thanks to the clocks you helped to purchase for me. \r\n\r\nThank you for helping me to connect with my students this way and allowing them to connect with each other. Although it doesn't happen often, sometimes the class is not completely signed up (or a student is absent) and I get to play a game with a student. They wrote them in class today, based on reading and research. Surprisingly, they love showing off their thinking this way, but more importantly, this strategy allows me to provide immediate and personalized feedback to each student.\r\n\r\n2) Last month, a student asked me about the first book of the Lord of the Rings. She had heard about it from a friend. I was thrilled to take her right over to my shelf and boast that I had a copy of The Hobbit she could borrow. She was just as excited as me!\r\n\r\n3) Thanks to you, I have been handing out pens when students don't come to class prepared. With just 4 1/2 weeks left, I have 12 pens (out of the box of 144 pens you bought for me). So much writing and thinking happened because of your gift. Thank you!!!\r\n\r\n4) Just today, four people made use of my chess clocks. The students have been especially enthusiastic, not only about the drum's beautiful shell texture and color, but also about its crisp responsiveness and the unique depth of sound it brings to our ensemble's overall balance.\r\n\r\nAs our program continues to grow, we're committed to exploring the full range of instrumental possibilities available to our students. Enhancing our percussion section allows us to deepen our understanding of musical color. This is especially important as we prepare to launch a new ensemble class next year, which will bring in even more students with diverse musical interests and needs.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous support.
