When I initially began the project, I did not know what to expect. I had heard other teachers were able to fully fund projects, but would that really work for me? This was my first year every trying and I am floored by the generous donations, so I'd like to share how we've been using them. \r\n\r\nFirst, I want to tell you about the stretch bands on student chairs. The first day I put them out, I only put them on 4 chairs at 1 table. I explained that there were people in our community, including some of our very own parents that donated money for them to have tools that allow them to fidget quietly which would allow them to focus easier. We discussed how we could use them appropriately and the purpose. Initially I was afraid they might snap them, or use them to make noises instead of their intended purpose. To my surprise, they became excited everyday when I added more bands to the next sets of chairs. So much so that I noticed them switching chairs just to have the bands (some I left without bands as not all students preferred them). Students began asking, \"Ms. Lucero, can I switch my chair?\" \"of course you can, that's what they're here for!\" You would see some students enjoyed just resting their feet on them like a step, while others would bounce their feet on it when they got fidgety. Some would even kick their shoes off! During semester exams, I made sure everyone had a chair with a band that wanted it.....nearly all of them did. \r\n\r\nSecond, with your donations I was also able to purchase stools for my small group table. We have found even in middle school students learn best when they work in small groups instead of a large classroom listening to a teacher talk. I wanted the small group table to be something special, something different for them, a place we could work together, take risks and speak up. I call it my \"conference room\" and they know it's a special place. With the stools it allows us to be close and what they love even more is we were able to purchase fidget cushion that they use on their feet and they love it! \r\n\r\nI will be attaching photos as well so you can see the tools in action. Note that I did not ask students to \"pose\" with their feet. The pictures are in the moment and shows just how much the students naturally use them and it has made a difference in their ability to focus. Our semester exam scores as a whole were 2% higher than the entire district. I'd say you are all a part of their success, so thank you kindly!","fullyFundedDate":1759976651754,"projectUrl":"project/middle-schoolers-in-sensory-overload/9791408/","projectTitle":"Middle Schoolers in Sensory Overload","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lucero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9220769"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_69684","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":969,"numTeachers":64,"percentFrplEligible":54,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":6,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":66,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"15.1:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":84.3,"schoolId":69684,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Davidsen Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Davidsen Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/hillsborough-county-public-school-district/davidsen-middle-school/69684"}
