As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, I marvel every day at how we sighted people take advantage of incidental learning--learning by watching someone do it. We did not have to be taught step by step how to wash dishes or make an afternoon snack, we just watched someone do it. However, what happens when your sight is impaired. What happens when your brain has difficulty processing what your eyes are communicating?\r\n\r\n The Expanded Core Curriculum is what we use to teach visually impaired students, and that curriculum includes the area of Independent Living Skills and Social Skills. With this specific teaching, our students pick up on how to perform various daily living activities. The boy who does not see his mother tending to a pot on the stove may need additional instruction when it is time to learn cooking skills (i.e. what kind of spoon should be used to stir something hot on a stove? What are strategies for staying safe when working with a stove?). How to communicate what you want to eat when at a restaurant or how to interact with others while eating together are skills that our students can learn in the classroom with all of the appliances we have been gifted!\r\n\r\n The impact of your donation is a positive one! My students are already learning so much with these appliances, and their skills will significantly increase. They are very appreciative!
