I have been able to see my students get excited about explaining their work to their classmates as they are the \"teacher\" for their group.\r\n\r\nThe most recent thing that my students used the whiteboards for was a semester review rotation. They had to solve one problem together with their group and then choose one 'teacher' to explain it to the other groups as they rotated around the room gathering other sample review problems. It was an eye-opening experience for them as some of the problems tested their memory! It makes it so much more convenient for students to document their progress when they have clipboards to hold the task cards. Otherwise, I receive papers that are either bunched up from being shoved in their pockets, or wet papers because they put them on the ground while we are outside. One of the lessons we will complete in the next semester will be orienteering and the materials will be a tremendous help as the students have to navigate a course using a preprinted course layout and they will need to mark down the checkpoints as they maneuver through the course.\r\n\r\nKeeping our locker rooms clean is another positive feeling for our students. We only have two day time custodial staff for a school of 3000 students, so they aren't always available to clean and stock the locker room throughout the day. I have always enjoyed reading and as a teacher I have been trying to encourage my students to read more in the target language, Spanish. In almost every professional development course I have taken lately, the emphasis is on encouraging students to read more in the target language because studies show that students need a ton of \"input\" before they can produce the language.\r\n It is not easy to entice high school students to read, especially in a language that they hardly know. However, if you can engage students with material that is interesting, you have a better chance of enticing them to read. That was the piece I was missing! Last year, I asked for a novel for my classroom that my students would not have been able to purchase so I needed to have it available in my classroom. The interest level sky rocketed from reading that novel. I then found this novel, Es Posible Sonar (It is Possible to Dream), written by a Spanish teacher with wonderful tools and an engaging storyline based on true events in a real place. I knew I needed this book in my classroom library. \r\n\r\nMy students have just started reading it and they already love it! I, of course, told them how I was able to obtain the set of books. I am so appreciative that an organization like Donors Choose manages this type of program and extremely appreciative that donors like you care about students and teachers. This has made a huge difference, because now we can keep all of the students work organized and, in the classroom, so that \"the dog cannot eat their homework.\" As for the paper, pencils, and highlighters, we are now able to provide materials for students who either forget their own or are unable to purchase the supplies needed for the classroom. \r\n\r\nStudents recently took their baseline state diagnostic test for the year. Now that we have the results back, utilizing the supplies that were donated will be even more important.
