I have always enjoyed reading and as a teacher I have been trying to encourage my students to read more in the target language, Spanish. In almost every professional development course I have taken lately, the emphasis is on encouraging students to read more in the target language because studies show that students need a ton of \"input\" before they can produce the language.\r\n It is not easy to entice high school students to read, especially in a language that they hardly know. However, if you can engage students with material that is interesting, you have a better chance of enticing them to read. That was the piece I was missing! Last year, I asked for a novel for my classroom that my students would not have been able to purchase so I needed to have it available in my classroom. The interest level sky rocketed from reading that novel. I then found this novel, Es Posible Sonar (It is Possible to Dream), written by a Spanish teacher with wonderful tools and an engaging storyline based on true events in a real place. I knew I needed this book in my classroom library. \r\n\r\nMy students have just started reading it and they already love it! I, of course, told them how I was able to obtain the set of books. I am so appreciative that an organization like Donors Choose manages this type of program and extremely appreciative that donors like you care about students and teachers. We use the folders daily, for students to keep their notes, important vocabulary terms, classwork, and writing samples in one place. This has made a huge difference, because now we can keep all of the students work organized and, in the classroom, so that \"the dog cannot eat their homework.\" As for the paper, pencils, and highlighters, we are now able to provide materials for students who either forget their own or are unable to purchase the supplies needed for the classroom. \r\n\r\nStudents recently took their baseline state diagnostic test for the year. Now that we have the results back, utilizing the supplies that were donated will be even more important. These new tools have opened doors to learning in ways that paper and pencil simply couldn't. The Apple Pencil Pro allows them to annotate diagrams, label cell structures, and draw organ systems directly on the iPad with precision. The Magic Keyboard helps them type lab reports, research assignments, and study guides more efficiently, without struggling with small on-screen keyboards.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is how interactive learning has become. They love zooming in on detailed images, tracing pathways in body systems, and using color to highlight important parts of their notes. It's no longer just \"studying science\"—it's exploring science.\r\n\r\nOne of my ESOL students, who used to avoid writing because of spelling and language barriers, now confidently types and edits her work using translation and spell-check features. By all reasonable measures it was a success! \r\n\r\nHere's how it worked:\r\n* I used the Hershey bars to review equivalent fractions (my students LOVED this)\r\n* Then I used the principles from the Hershey bars to practice re-writing fractions with trigonometric functions\r\n* Next we used the fraction blocks to look at adding fractions with unlike denominators\r\n* This process was then extended into adding fractions with unlike trig denominators \r\n* Lastly, we used the fraction blocks to explore what it means to divide fractions (something most of us were taught as a process but never shown why it works)\r\n* Then we applied this to the myriad examples of compound fractions in trig identities\r\n\r\nThe end result was students simplifying trig identities and being better prepared to encounter them in Pre-calculus. Along the way, there were many \"ah-ha\" moments with regard to the fractions.\r\n\r\nOne student was unable to divide the Hershey bar 4 ways and write the fraction two ways (as 1/4 and as 3/12). I grabbed some graph paper to outline the problem and with a gasp she blurted out....\"I see it! I see it now!\" \r\n\r\nWe can argue all day that students in Algebra 2 should already know this material....and they should. But they very often don't. Thanks to your generosity, I was able to fill in some critical holes with fraction skills AND push deeper into the upper level math to prepare students for their next steps.\r\n\r\nIt was truly a great use of the weeks following our end of course exam and I could not have done it without your help.
