My students used these kits to do experiments on how fertilizer impacts algae growth. They did research on the process of algae blooms and what the causes and effects of them are. They learned that overfertilization \"feeds\" the algae and causes them to grow and block sunlight from water plants, causing a decrease in photosynthesis. They connected this to the process of eutrophication. \r\n\r\nAs part of this project, we were able to go to a local lake and look at how conditions have changed since the data we had from 1993. Students collected water and algae samples and measured the amount of nitrates, phosphates and other materials in the water that might come from overfertilization. Students analyzed the data and determined that the lake is a eutrophied lake. They did an analysis of local industry/housing to see where the problem may have come from. \r\n\r\nThey were then tasked with coming up with solutions and realized that this problem was not one with a simple solution. They mostly determined that the lake would have to be dredged some and something put into the water to kill some of the excessive bacteria that was in there. They were also concerned about the droughts we are having and how that is limiting the ability of the lake to recuperate. Students may not have come up with a working solution but they now understand the process and ways to help other lakes from becoming overfertilized.","fullyFundedDate":1783177294364,"projectUrl":"project/saving-our-streams-confronting-algal-bl/10362915/","projectTitle":"Saving Our Streams: Confronting Algal Blooms","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Ledford","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5713576_orig.png?crop=512,512,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1783089197854","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5713576"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45589","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1622,"numTeachers":109,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":30,"percentWhite":53,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":6,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":72.7,"schoolId":45589,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Columbia High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Columbia High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/columbia-county-school-district/columbia-high-school/45589"}
