Teaching writing skills can seem overwhelming, a bit intimidating, and stressful because students can be resistant when asked to write a formal essay. For many years I have researched ways to improve student understanding of the writing process and its purpose. Working with color coding has shown me that not only does the proficient writer improve but the struggling writer is able to grasp the targeted skills with more clarity. This project has had a layered effect within my classroom, not only did I grow as a teacher, but my students learned how to work through positive struggle in the writing process. \r\n\r\nColorful Writing has required me to reflect on strategies and techniques I've used in the past and through that reflection I have been able to fine tune how I teach students to write with well thought out lessons, utilizing Marzano techniques for engagement, and using a student-centered model of teaching. I was also able to build stronger relationships and trust with my students when conferencing. Students were asked to highlight the hook, transitional words and phrases, and the evidence in their essays as these were the targeted skills in this particular essay. Having students color code targeted elements helps when providing feedback as the student can 'see' if they used too much evidence or incorporated transitions throughout the essay. It also keeps the conference focused and objective, thus building that trust so greatly needed when sharing writing. As an educator I can quickly assess the students' work and determine their areas of strength and areas that my need more support and practice. In class we reviewed the concept of a hook which is a technique in writing where the writer begins the essay with something enticing to encourage the reader to continue reading. Students have been working on writing anecdotes as their hooks and the photos show the work done by several of my 6th grade students. We talked about telling a story and how utilizing this strategy brings voice to their writing. We also are working on the difference between strong evidence and evidence that is repetitive, which for many young writers is difficult to do.\r\n\r\nStudent engagement is a key component in making learning successful. What I found with this project is that students were able to work through the revision process more smoothly because it was clear what editing needed to be done. Students were more engaged in the writing process because they owned their work and were motivated to improve it. Again, color coding targeted elements dramatically changed the way students saw the writing process as well as provided an opportunity for feedback which is critical for young writers. \r\n\r\nThrough this learning process and the time spent working on it I showed my students that I am invested in them and their work.\r\n\r\nThank you for the opportunity to learn and grow!","fullyFundedDate":1756604569513,"projectUrl":"project/colorful-writing/9661097/","projectTitle":"Colorful Writing","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Swords","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10230089"},{"teacherId":2715723,"projectId":9756617,"letterContent":"I cannot thank you for your kindness and willingness to give, toward the \"let's get moving\" success in our classroom. The new resources have been an essential addition to our daily instruction, allowing students to engage with the language in meaningful and interactive ways.\r\n\r\nOne recent example is our unit on numbers and dates. With the materials you helped provide, students participated in a classroom activity called Bingo de NĂºmeros. Because they knew they would receive a reward at the end, their level of engagement increased significantly. Every student was eager to participate, and many took risks in speaking Spanish aloud—something that does not always come easily at this level.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first encountered the materials, their enthusiasm was evident. They immediately expressed excitement and curiosity, and several asked if we could continue using these resources in future lessons. This response demonstrated not only their motivation but also the value of making language learning both accessible and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nOur next steps build upon this momentum. Students will soon be creating their own Spanish calendars, labeling days, months, and important events. This project will allow them to apply new vocabulary in a creative way while practicing presentation skills with their peers, which will be in correlation with Hispanic Heritage Month. \r\n\r\nYour contribution has made a lasting impact by fostering active participation, supporting student confidence, and enhancing the overall learning environment.
