Because of your generosity, my students had the opportunity to experience a realistic glimpse into adulthood and learn financial skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives.\r\n\r\nIn today's technology-driven world, where young people are constantly exposed to online shopping, instant payments, and credit offers, it is more important than ever for students to understand concepts such as taxes, interest rates, budgeting, mortgages, insurance, and the dangers of credit card debt. This project gave them the chance to explore these topics in a meaningful and engaging way.\r\n\r\nEach student was randomly assigned a career and salary. From there, they calculated their gross and net income, determined their tax bracket, selected housing and transportation within their budget, and accounted for the many expenses required to live independently. Throughout the project, students quickly learned that earning a paycheck is only part of the financial picture.\r\n\r\nOne of the most enjoyable aspects of the project involved rolling dice to determine unexpected life events. Students faced unexpected expenses, including emergency costs, vehicle repairs, medical bills, and other real-life financial challenges. They then had to decide how they would cover those costs and adjust their budgets accordingly.\r\n\r\nI was genuinely surprised by how frugal many of my students became as the project progressed. They carefully weighed their decisions, looked for ways to save money, and learned firsthand that every financial choice has consequences. It was wonderful to watch them think critically and adapt when life threw them unexpected challenges.\r\n\r\nAs a teacher at a Title I school, I was also incredibly encouraged by the number of students who shared dreams of attending Harvard University. Their aspirations reminded me that our students have big goals and bright futures, and experiences like this help them understand the financial decisions that will support those dreams.\r\n\r\nThe most rewarding part of the project was reading the students' reflections at the end. Their responses were often funny, insightful, and heartwarming. Many expressed surprise at how expensive adulthood can be, while others wrote about the importance of saving money, avoiding unnecessary debt, and planning for emergencies. Several students commented that they now better understand the financial challenges their parents face every day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, these students gained practical financial knowledge that cannot be learned from a textbook alone. You helped transform abstract math concepts into real-world lessons about responsibility, decision-making, and future planning.\r\nThank you for investing in our students and helping them build skills that will benefit them long after they leave my classroom. Your generosity made this meaningful learning experience possible, and we are truly grateful.","fullyFundedDate":1746225825166,"projectUrl":"project/real-world-project-jobs-bills-taxes-b/9293806/","projectTitle":"Real World Project Jobs, Bills, Taxes, Budgeting, etc.","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. DeSavigny","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8808829"},{"teacherId":8673908,"projectId":10168595,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for helping make our project \" Tween Book Series\" a reality! The high-interest stories have turned what used to be reluctant reading time into something students look forward to every day. One specific moment that stands out was when we started our first book from the series — a student who rarely picks up a book on his own actually asked if he could keep reading past the allotted time because he \"had to know what happened next!\"\r\nThe reaction when the books first arrived was pure excitement. The moment I unpacked the box, students gathered around with wide eyes and big smiles, eagerly picking up titles and flipping through pages. Many of them said things like \"These look awesome!\" and \"Can we start reading right now?\" It was heartwarming to see them so motivated and enthusiastic about reading.\r\nBecause of your kindness, my students are not only building their reading skills they're discovering the joy of getting lost in a great story. As someone with a government and military background, I understand the importance of setting goals, overcoming challenges, and celebrating success. Seeing students proudly display a framed certificate of their achievement made it clear that even small gestures can have a big impact. Parents shared with me how their children's first action at home was to frame their certificate—a simple step that created lasting pride and motivation.\r\n\r\nSince earning these certificates, students have continued to build on their skills through the Ignition Program by EverFi, covering cybersecurity and online safety, as well as entrepreneurship and marketing for grades 7–10—despite nearly 90% of our students being in 6th grade. All modules are competency-based, allowing students to progress at their own pace while mastering critical skills for the future.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, we introduced practical financial simulations in class using \"Gator Bucks,\" where students practiced managing a class economy—earning income, paying rent, and taking on class jobs. Next year, we hope to expand this program with the 3-envelope challenge, teaching students to allocate money toward tithing/charity, investments, and expenses. The headphones you helped provide ensure that every student can clearly hear instruction, focus without distractions, and participate independently. This allows learning to be more personalized, engaging, and effective.\r\n\r\nWhat excites my students most is how immersive their learning has become. When we \"travel\" to ancient civilizations or explore faraway regions of the world, they can now hear every detail—the sounds of bustling cities, expert explanations, and cultural music—without competing noise from around the room. Many students have shared that it feels like they are truly inside the lesson instead of just watching it. That sense of immersion has increased their focus and curiosity.\r\n\r\nI have especially seen growth in students who are easily distracted or who need extra support with comprehension. With clear audio and fewer interruptions, they are more confident working independently and completing online assignments. Students who once struggled to stay engaged during videos are now attentive and asking thoughtful questions. If students didn't have any Missing assignments, they added their name to their bucket for the end of quarter drawing.\r\nThe day of the drawing is full of excitement, the less Missing assignments a student has the better his or her chance to win a piece of equipment increases.
