Not only did it give the students the opportunity to use their hands to assemble the kits, but it allows them to spend time outdoors learning how to identify birds and learning about bird behaviors. They even got to learn how to use binoculars with a community member from the local Audubon Society. \r\n\r\nOnce the nesting boxes were assembled, the students then used a drill to make holes in PVC pipes which were used as posts for the nest boxes. The students then used post holes diggers to install the poles. For many, this was the first time using post hole diggers. Now that the nest boxes are installed, and one with a bird feeder right outside the classroom window, the students monitor the boxes once a week for nesting activity, this is something members of the Audubon Society do in order to monitor the local Bluebird population. The students record data and have learned how to make notations as to the nesting activity and the different bird species that may inhabit the boxes. They also take pictures and videos. \r\n\r\nThis project grew into so much more than I ever imagined!!! It allowed the students to experience so many \"firsts\"; from assembling their first nest box, to using a drill, post hole diggers, and binoculars. On two occasions birds have flown out when checking and the students were so thrilled!! One day, a male and female Bluebird came swooping down to protect their eggs. So far, the students have seen chickadee and blue bird eggs. We can't wait for them to hatch! \r\n\r\nThe project has taught the students to have an appreciation for nature and has taught them that despite the academic challenges they may have, they can excel in such amazing ways when working with their hands, with each other, and in nature. \r\nThese nesting boxes will be used year after year, so your contribution to the fulfillment of this project not only impacts students right now, but it will also impact students for many years to come. \r\n\r\nOne day, one of my students said, \"I'm sad because I won't be here next year, but I am happy that I have good memories like what we did today.\"\r\n\r\nWe truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts for allowing us so many opportunities.","fullyFundedDate":1734185800081,"projectUrl":"project/the-birds-need-us-and-we-need-them/8810610/","projectTitle":"The Birds Need Us and We Need Them","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Perkins","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7986809_orig.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1746372549212","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7986809"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45484","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":911,"numTeachers":63,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":80,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"14.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":68.9,"schoolId":45484,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Inverness Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Inverness Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/citrus-county-school-district/inverness-middle-school/45484"}
