Becoming a certified yoga and meditation teacher has deeply enriched my teaching practice, especially in my work with my hospital homebound students. Attending the certification training gave me an immersive experience in mindfulness techniques, trauma-informed practices, and adaptive movement strategies tailored to students with limited mobility or chronic illness. This training illuminated the importance of nervous system regulation—not just for stress relief, but as a foundation for learning and emotional resilience. I now better understand how to meet my students where they are, both physically and emotionally, and create a calm, supportive virtual learning environment that acknowledges their unique challenges.\r\n\r\nThe highlight of the training was learning guided meditations and breathwork specifically designed for individuals facing medical trauma or anxiety. As a hospital homebound teacher, I often work with students who are navigating intense emotional and physical stress, and this training was a game-changer. Learning how to guide students through short, accessible breathwork and visualization exercises has empowered me to offer them moments of peace, clarity, and grounding during our academic sessions. These moments are not only healing but also help improve their focus and engagement with their studies.\r\n\r\nOne specific technique I've already integrated into my virtual classroom is a simple \"5-minute reset,\" where we begin each session with gentle seated stretches followed by a guided breathing practice. One of my middle school students, who was struggling with anxiety due to long hospital stays, recently told me that these brief practices help her feel more in control and ready to learn. This response affirmed that integrating yoga and meditation into my teaching is not just an added benefit—it's a vital tool in supporting my students' well-being and academic success.","fullyFundedDate":1740219509324,"projectUrl":"project/hospital-homebound-mindful-yogis/8849430/","projectTitle":"Hospital Homebound Mindful Yogis","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Heising","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8045176_orig.jpg?crop=2283,2283,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729814645117","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/hospitalhomebound-mindful-yogis"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_45048","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":680,"numTeachers":124,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":53,"percentWhite":12,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":27,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"5.5:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":22.4,"schoolId":45048,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Atlantic Technical High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Atlantic Technical High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/broward-county-public-schools/atlantic-technical-center/45048"}
