Having crayons, colored pencils, and other basic materials readily available means students can begin assignments without worrying about whether they have what they need. This is especially important for students who may not always have school supplies at home.\r\n\r\nThe storage bins have also helped create a more organized classroom where students can easily find and return materials independently. This saves instructional time and helps students take responsibility for their classroom. Having a reliable pencil sharpener may seem like a small thing, but it keeps a simple problem from becoming a distraction and allows us to spend more time focused on learning.\r\n\r\nMy students have especially enjoyed having the colored pencils and crayons available for creative assignments and projects. They take pride in adding their own creativity to their work, and having access to these supplies helps make learning more engaging.\r\n\r\nThese materials may be simple, but they are used every single day. Each issue gives us opportunities to read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational texts while practicing skills such as identifying the central idea, making inferences, analyzing characters, determining theme, and using text evidence to support our thinking.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and interactive. We read together, discuss what we notice, annotate texts, answer questions, and work with partners and small groups to dig deeper into what we are reading. Storyworks has made it easier to introduce new texts that grab students' attention and give them something meaningful to talk and write about.\r\n\r\nMy students especially enjoy the variety of topics and the fact that the stories feel relevant and interesting to them. Students who may not always be excited about reading a traditional textbook or longer passage are often eager to pick up a Storyworks issue because they want to know what the next story or article is about. The engaging topics have helped even reluctant readers find something that sparks their curiosity.\r\n\r\nThis subscription has helped me make reading instruction more engaging while giving my students regular opportunities to practice important 5th-grade reading skills with texts they actually want to read. Students are using critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, strategy, and teamwork while working with their classmates. They are learning to think through challenges, try different strategies, and keep going when something doesn't work the first time.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, learning doesn't always have to involve a worksheet or a computer. These games give students a chance to step away from screens, interact with their classmates, and apply skills in a hands-on way. I have been able to use them during appropriate free time, after students complete their work, and as engaging opportunities for students to practice working together.\r\n\r\nSome of my students especially enjoy the challenge of trying to beat their own previous score or figure out a problem that seemed impossible at first. I have also seen students who are usually quieter become more involved when they are working with a partner or team. Watching students encourage one another, celebrate a classmate's success, and laugh together while still thinking critically has been one of the best parts of this project.\r\n\r\nThese games have helped create a classroom environment where students understand that learning can happen anywhere, even when they are playing a game. Even at this age, students can enjoy a great story while thinking deeply about the message behind it.\r\n\r\nWe use these books for read-alouds, mentor text writing lessons, and small-group discussions. Students practice identifying themes, making inferences, analyzing characters, using text evidence, and connecting what they read to their own lives and the world around them. The Valentine's Day books give us opportunities to talk about kindness, friendship, empathy, and treating others with respect. The Black History Month books introduce students to important historical figures and everyday heroes while opening the door for conversations about courage, perseverance, culture, and resilience.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive. We don't just read a book and move on. We stop to talk, question, make connections, notice the author's choices, and share our thinking. My students especially enjoy the picture books because they are quick to read but still give us so much to talk about. Students who may struggle with longer chapter books often become especially engaged during these read-alouds because they can focus on the story, illustrations, and discussion without feeling overwhelmed by the length of the text.\r\n\r\nThese books have helped create meaningful moments in our classroom while showing my students that there is no age limit on enjoying a picture book. Most importantly, they give my students opportunities to see themselves, their classmates, and people from different backgrounds reflected in the books we share together.","fullyFundedDate":1768916064623,"projectUrl":"project/picture-books-with-purpose/10026716/","projectTitle":"Picture Books With Purpose","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hatcher","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/tiffanystrait"},{"teacherId":774645,"projectId":9891882,"letterContent":"Having a class set of Chasing Vermeer has made a huge difference in our reading classroom. Instead of students sharing books or waiting for a turn to read, every student now has their own copy to follow along, annotate, and reference during our discussions and activities.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students are practicing important reading skills such as determining the central idea, analyzing characters and their perspectives, making inferences, using text evidence, and explaining their thinking. We stop throughout the novel to discuss clues, make predictions, ask questions, and support our ideas with evidence from the text. Students are learning that reading is more than just finishing a book, it is about thinking deeply about what the author is saying and being able to explain their ideas.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. Students read independently, with partners, and together as a class. They write in their books, discuss their thinking with classmates, and participate in activities that allow them to dig deeper into the story. Having their own copy of Chasing Vermeer has made it easier for every student to participate and truly become part of the book study.\r\n\r\nSome of my students who don't always consider themselves \"readers\" have especially enjoyed Chasing Vermeer because of its mystery and clues. They love trying to solve the mystery before the characters do and coming back to the text to find evidence to support their theories. Seeing students become excited to read the next chapter, talk about their predictions, and argue their ideas using evidence has been one of the most rewarding parts of this project.\r\n\r\nI am so thankful to the DonorsChoose Community for helping make this shared reading experience possible for my students.
