Through this project, students were able to engage in a hands-on project that allowed them to put themselves in the position of astronauts going to the moon! Students read about the life story of Leland Melvin, and saw the perspective of a an astronaut who overcame many hurdles and prejudices in his life to achieve incredible things! We drew parallels between characters and ourselves, or people we knew in our own lives, and students were able to make valuable connections between the classwork they engaged in and the information shared in Leland Melvin's story.\r\n\r\nThrough our hands-on moon colony project, which is still on-going, students are creating models, blueprints, and applying engineering concepts with hands-on materials that allow them to immerse themselves into scientific processes that simulate real-world actions.\r\n\r\nDuring the month of February, students learned about the lives of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan - the women featured in the book and film Hidden Figures - and important topics connecting civil rights with social and scientific advancement were discussed. Students also learned the story of Nichelle Nichols and Mae Jemison.\r\n\r\nMany students admitted they had never seen space science, travel, or aerospace engineering as a real, physical concept - something they could touch, engage with, learn and even consider as a future! Through this project, several students have learned about themselves and how much they enjoy aerospace science, and are hoping to pursue further learning in that topic in the future!\r\n\r\nThese projects would never have been possible without the generous donations provided, we are so grateful to you!","fullyFundedDate":1728001237102,"projectUrl":"project/everyone-belongs-on-the-moon-celebratin/8689507/","projectTitle":"Everyone Belongs on the Moon!
