Your generous contributions are making a meaningful difference in how my students learn and practice skills they will use beyond the classroom. We are using the new resources throughout our Career Management and Advocacy & Real-World Application classes. The cleaning supplies are especially valuable during our Practicum Stations, where students practice employability skills such as cleaning, organizing, following a task analysis, selecting the correct supplies, completing assigned job tasks, and cleaning up their work areas. These hands-on experiences allow students to practice being responsible, following directions, and becoming more independent in a work-like environment.\r\n\r\nThe teaching supplies, including laminating materials, have also been extremely helpful. I laminate vocabulary cards, visual directions, choice boards, task-analysis steps, and other instructional materials so they can be used repeatedly. These durable visuals are especially important for our Active Participant students, who benefit from errorless participation, picture-supported instruction, and hands-on materials. Our students were excited when they first saw the colorful, organized resources and new materials. Having accessible visuals and real objects available at our Learning Lab Vocabulary, Flexible/Whole Group, and Practicum Stations has encouraged students to participate, communicate, make choices, and practice skills at their individual levels. The snacks provided through the project are also used as incentives and positive reinforcement, helping motivate students as they work toward their individual classroom, behavioral, and employability goals.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building students' independence by moving from teacher-supported instruction to increasingly independent real-world practice. Students will learn vocabulary, participate in whole-group instruction, practice vocational and daily living skills at the Practicum Station, and complete differentiated exit tickets to demonstrate what they have learned. We will continue using the cleaning supplies for employability training, the laminated materials to provide accessible visual supports, and incentives to celebrate student effort and progress. Since starting at \"The River,\" I had noticed that the students who use wheelchairs were sitting all day long. As an occupational therapist and assistive technology professional, I found this to be alarming and very unfortunate. When students who are non-ambulatory sit in one position all day, this can lead to comorbidities such as spasticity, obesity, poor digestion & respiration, contractures, and various forms of scoliosis, etc. I initially provided an in-service to administration and teachers educating them on 24-Hour Posture & Activity Management (PAM), which is an intervention aimed at preventing non-ambulatory individuals from living a sedentary lifestyle. Then, I started the process of obtaining the funds to purchase the beanbags to build the Cozy Corners in the Medical & Educational Support (MES) classrooms. \r\n\tSince obtaining the beanbags, the teachers have begun to build their Cozy Corners and students have begun to exit their wheelchairs during the school day and relax their muscles while laying on the beanbags. We have already noticed positive changes in the students; they are happier, more relaxed and they are showing signs that they want to MOVE! This Cozy Corner project has started a cultural shift at The River; teachers have gone from not wanting to move the students at all, to wanting to move the students.
