My students,who usually approach reading with caution, eagerly grabbed the new instruments and literacy tools to \"sound out\" words through beats and patterns. A student who rarely volunteers stood up to lead the class in tapping out syllables to a new story we were reading. \r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited. Several students asked if we could start a lesson right then, and a few even offered to help organize everything so we could begin sooner.\r\n\r\nNow that these resources are part of our classroom, our next steps involve expanding our \"Silence to Sound\" literacy routines. Students are beginning small-group literacy stations where they pair reading skills with rhythm, movement, and hands-on tools.\r\n\r\nYour support didn't just provide supplies—you opened the door for my students to find their voices, take risks, and experience literacy in ways that feel safe, joyful, and empowering. As an Intervention Aide in the Student Advisors' Office, I support students through a wide range of challenges—from de-escalating intense moments to conducting necessary safety searches. Because our school environment is more emotional than physical, many students spend their time focused on events that have already happened or worrying about situations that have not yet occurred. To help them return to the present moment, our office has been transformed into a grounding space where students and staff sit on meditation cushions, surrounded by living plants and the soft sound of a small waterfall. These simple elements gently draw their attention back to the here and now. Once they are centered, we introduce breathwork, the gateway to calming the nervous system. Tools such as Breathing Lights guide students through techniques they can use independently when they begin to feel overwhelmed, and as they grow more comfortable, we incorporate singing bowls and sound machines to deepen their ability to relax, focus, and regulate their emotions.\r\n\r\nAll of these practices directly support literacy because students cannot fully learn, read, or comprehend when their minds and bodies are dysregulated. By helping them become present and emotionally grounded, we improve their attention, strengthen their working memory, and reduce the stress that often makes reading or writing feel difficult. When students are calm and able to think clearly, they are better equipped to understand what they read, process new vocabulary, and communicate effectively. Creating a regulated environment is not just about helping students feel safe—it is about building the mental and emotional foundation that literacy depends on.
