First, the organizational tools have really helped me keep my things together especially since this semester I am a travelling teacher and have no room of my own. Small things like the binder clips have been a huge help for me.\r\n\r\nMy students however absolutely love the instruments and the koosh balls. I use the balls daily to help them get over nervousness in answering questions in Spanish. The singing bowl has been great for brain breaks.\r\n\r\n Without a doubt, the stars of the show are the ukuleles and guitar. I have been teaching some of my students basic chord progressions and plan on starting a ukulele club in the spring. This will be a big help for students that are interested in learning music but lack funds to purchase anything yet. \r\n\r\nIt has been a really nice thing to work with my students using these gifts. It got them up and moving, critically thinking, and having \"conversations\" with each other, often anonymously. It was perfect for students who are more hesitant to join in verbal class discussions. \r\n\r\nThe same class also worked together to make character analysis posters for To Kill a Mockingbird. This project allowed them to demonstrate their creativity while analyzing, then showcase their work.\r\n\r\nFor my ELA 1 classes, being able to purchase copies of Dear Justyce was a great opportunity for students who wanted to keep reading after we finished Dear Martin. We recently used them during a lesson where students analyzed historical sources and worked together to build explanations and visual models of what they were learning. Having these materials available made a huge difference. Students were more engaged, more willing to participate, and more confident sharing their ideas. One moment that stood out was watching students eagerly grab the materials and immediately start discussing the task instead of waiting for directions. It completely changed the energy in the room.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the new materials, their reactions were pure excitement. Many asked if we would be using them again and wanted to know what activities were coming next. For some students, having hands-on and visually clear resources helped concepts finally click. Others appreciated being able to work collaboratively without feeling rushed or confused. It created a learning environment where students felt supported and motivated.\r\n\r\nBecause of your support, our next steps include using these resources for upcoming lessons that focus on critical thinking, discussion, and reflection. Students will continue applying what they've learned through projects, written responses, and group activities that help them connect historical ideas to the world today. The new music-infused literacy resources and engaging supplies have become a daily part of our learning, and the impact has been immediate and powerful.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable moments came during a vocabulary rhythm activity we tried for the first time after the materials arrived. A student who rarely volunteers stood up to lead the class in tapping out syllables to a new story we were reading. \r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they were excited. Several students asked if we could start a lesson right then, and a few even offered to help organize everything so we could begin sooner.\r\n\r\nNow that these resources are part of our classroom, our next steps involve expanding our \"Silence to Sound\" literacy routines. As an Intervention Aide in the Student Advisors' Office, I support students through a wide range of challenges—from de-escalating intense moments to conducting necessary safety searches. Because our school environment is more emotional than physical, many students spend their time focused on events that have already happened or worrying about situations that have not yet occurred. To help them return to the present moment, our office has been transformed into a grounding space where students and staff sit on meditation cushions, surrounded by living plants and the soft sound of a small waterfall. These simple elements gently draw their attention back to the here and now. Once they are centered, we introduce breathwork, the gateway to calming the nervous system. Tools such as Breathing Lights guide students through techniques they can use independently when they begin to feel overwhelmed, and as they grow more comfortable, we incorporate singing bowls and sound machines to deepen their ability to relax, focus, and regulate their emotions.\r\n\r\nAll of these practices directly support literacy because students cannot fully learn, read, or comprehend when their minds and bodies are dysregulated. By helping them become present and emotionally grounded, we improve their attention, strengthen their working memory, and reduce the stress that often makes reading or writing feel difficult. When students are calm and able to think clearly, they are better equipped to understand what they read, process new vocabulary, and communicate effectively. Creating a regulated environment is not just about helping students feel safe—it is about building the mental and emotional foundation that literacy depends on. When students can show up fully in the moment, they can finally show up fully for learning.","fullyFundedDate":1762698873639,"projectUrl":"project/breathing-into-literacy/9877855/","projectTitle":"Breathing Into Literacy","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Atkinson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10342838"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_32304","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1168,"numTeachers":78,"percentFrplEligible":14,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":33,"percentWhite":44,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":13,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":67.7,"schoolId":32304,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about St Georges Technical High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"St Georges Technical High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/delaware/new-castle-vo-tech-school-district/st-georges-tech-high-school/32304"}
