While many people think of reading as a quiet, independent activity, in theatre we approach books as living texts—stories meant to be explored through voice, movement, and imagination. These new books introduce foundational skills such as sequencing, character analysis, emotional expression, and narrative structure. Using puppets alongside the texts allows students to externalize their thinking, practice dialogue, and experiment with storytelling in a developmentally appropriate and highly engaging way.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is active and collaborative. Students gather in a circle, listen closely to stories, predict what might happen next, and then bring the text to life through puppetry and dramatization. The puppets give students a safe entry point into performance, especially for those who may be hesitant to speak or act on their own. Through guided play and structured theatre activities, students retell stories, explore character motivations, and make creative choices—building literacy skills while also strengthening confidence, communication, and empathy.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who typically struggle with traditional reading tasks have especially thrived with these materials. I have seen reluctant readers become eager participants when they are able to \"speak\" through a puppet, and shy students take leadership roles during storytelling activities. The combination of books and puppets has transformed reading into an inclusive, joyful experience where every child can access the story in their own way. Because of your generosity, my students are not just reading stories—they are inhabiting them, and that has made all the difference.","fullyFundedDate":1760323991888,"projectUrl":"project/literacy-for-the-theatre-classroom/9820278/","projectTitle":"Literacy for the Theatre Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Caligiure","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp5110548_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1533769335137","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5110548"},{"teacherId":6075301,"projectId":9817975,"letterContent":"Thank you sincerely from the B/C Setting in the Southern Delaware School for the arts. My grade levels range from K-8. I teach students with the most severe disabilities in the school requiring a smaller group and special accommodations and modifications as listed in their Individualized Educations Plans. Reading is a true challenge for some of my students which affects their ability to succeed in the regular educational classrooms without ongoing interventions to level the playing field. I will always jump at the chance to add more learning opportunities to improve their success.\r\n The materials I ordered that I knew would be the most helpful were the Hands-On Reading Skills Teaching Kits. I have students who struggle with early reading and benefit from hands-on activities to teach letter sounds, blends, digraphs, sight words, consonants, vowels, etc... phonics! My students also have difficulties with comprehension so the reading comprehension skill cards were a good resource. They were thrilled to see new project manipulatives to help them learning reading. I teach elementary and middle schoolers who enjoy learning in a variety of ways so something new is always exciting for us all!\r\n My students and I are appreciative of the wonderful project supplies you donated to my classroom They are educational and great incentives for the students to do their best. The reading resources will be utilized frequently and I've offered to share them with other teachers in my building that could use them for enrichment and interventions as well.","fullyFundedDate":1760319884259,"projectUrl":"project/reading-delaware/9817975/","projectTitle":"Reading Delaware","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Keller","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6075301"},{"teacherId":570043,"projectId":9829905,"letterContent":"Since receiving the new resources, my students and I have been excitedly exploring the materials and finding creative ways to use them in our classroom. The flexible seating has transformed the learning environment, allowing students to choose spots where they feel most focused and engaged. We've already used the large chart paper for a collaborative phonics activity, where students worked together to sort and categorize sounds and words from our phonics kit. The reading trackers have helped our students with special needs. Seeing their excitement as they explored each resource reminded me how impactful these tools are in supporting learning.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their faces lit up with curiosity and enthusiasm. They immediately began asking questions, sharing ideas, and imagining new ways to use the resources in their learning. With these tools, students are more empowered to take ownership of their learning and explore lessons in ways that are meaningful to them. Because of your donation, my students now have access to a wide variety of new resources that are making a meaningful impact on their music literacy and overall engagement in the classroom.\r\n\r\nWe are actively using the children's books to connect music concepts to storytelling, helping students better understand rhythm, melody, and musical expression in a way that feels accessible and fun. The jazz band literature has given students the opportunity to explore a new style of music while learning how to read more complex rhythms, articulations, and form. We've also incorporated the flashcards and dry erase boards into daily warm-ups, where students practice note reading, rhythm identification, and musical vocabulary. These tools have allowed for quick check-ins, instant feedback, and hands-on learning that keeps every student involved.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, they were genuinely excited. Many immediately gravitated toward the books, eager to read them and share what they noticed about the music connections. Others were thrilled to see new jazz music, asking when we would get to start playing it. The dry erase boards and flashcards quickly became a favorite, as students enjoy being able to write, erase, and try again without fear of making mistakes. The overall energy in the room was one of curiosity, excitement, and motivation.\r\n\r\nThanks to these resources, our next steps include continuing to build strong music-reading skills while expanding into more ensemble-based literacy work. Students are beginning to apply what they've learned from the books and flashcards directly to their instruments, using the jazz literature to practice sight-reading, listening, and musical interpretation. These materials are helping create confident, independent musicians who are better prepared for future performances and musical experiences.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has truly enhanced our classroom and has given my students tools that will support their musical growth for years to come.
