The idea of getting outside in the spring/warmer weather and turning our old courtyard into a garden/bird sanctuary has made my students so excited to be in school. While winter weather and heavy snow have slowed our ability to plant and set up the space, the supplies have been actively used in our classroom to plan, learn, and build excitement for what's to come. \r\n\r\nWith these materials in hand, students have been researching and planning for the actions we will take in the spring. One favorite moment was watching students see and plan with supplies they may have never seen or used before. We have been sketching out ideas and layouts for how the courtyard will look. \r\n\r\nNext, once the snow melts and the ground is ready, and maybe once it becomes a little warmer outside, students will begin preparing the outdoor space, planting, and assembling the ecosystem for our new bird sanctuary. This connects to our 6th and 7th grade curriculum by talking about living organisms, ecosystems, and human impact on the environment. I cant wait for students to observe birds, collect data, and reflect on how creating habitats helps local wildlife. This courtyard garden will be a new place for students now and future students to enjoy learning. It would not be possible without your help and kindness. Students are far more willing to complete work and to cooperate with each other in these comfortable and flexible arrangements. Their efforts to engage in content have improved, and their relationships with each other have also blossomed as they have created different methods and standards for determine who can use the spaces and when they can be used. \r\n\r\nI'll be honest that I was nervous about incorporating flexible seating into a middle school classroom, as middle school students often struggle with self-regulation, but this seating has encouraged students to manage their own behaviors and to complete work appropriately in order to either gain access to the seating, prove that the seating is working for them, or retain access to the seating. Some classes cooperate with each other to take turns using the spaces. Some classes determine seating based on movement needs. Some classes compete with each other on assignments, assessments, or projects in order to gain access. My students are so excited about the graphic novels and many have already finished reading one. The pencils and dry erase markers have been very useful for those students who do not have the essential supplies to be successful for school, your donations helped with that need. \r\n\r\nWe have used the dry erase boards once already for a game, the students where so excited. The dry erase sponges were really needed for that game. I have two students who tend to use the seat cushions daily. By building this literacy corner, I have been able to meet with small groups of students related to our ARC curriculum. In this curriculum, we work to build strong readers and create a love of literacy. Because many of our students come to us lacking a strong literacy foundation, we both create that foundation while also extending their literacy skills at the middle school level simultaneously. This means that we need to pay close attention to how we create this love of reading because our students already feel behind in the work and we are working to both undo previous negative feelings about reading while also getting them exposed to grade level texts. The literacy corner has been a great addition to the work we are doing because students have a place to regroup and get comfortable-- they get a chance to see that reading can be fun and not just work. \r\n\r\nStudents were so excited to see the materials and utilize the resources. In my position, I work with students across many classes, so the impact of this project has been huge. The 6th graders have been most excited for the brain breaks, like the building materials, to help them reset and refocus. The older students, the 8th graders, have been really excited about the comfortable seating options they now have when reading. By offering texts that reflect a wider range of experiences, topics, and identities, students are more willing to take risks, engage deeply, and persist with challenging material.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is a daily, student-centered experience. Students choose books that interest them, read independently, and talk with peers and teachers about what they are learning. Since adding these new texts, I've seen increased focus during independent reading time and more organic conversations about books. One of my eighth graders, for example, has been completely immersed in the World War II books provided through this project. Because the topic aligns with his interests, he is reading longer, staying more engaged, and approaching reading with confidence rather than avoidance.\r\n\r\nThese books have helped transform reading from an assigned task into a meaningful habit for both my general education and special education students in grades 7 and 8.
