Some students have chosen to partake in the activity sheets that come with the tiles, learning about how the different fractions compare in size. Other students have been less enthusiastic about direct learning, but have enjoyed using the tiles in more creative ways to create pictures. However, as they do so, I am convinced they are taking in ideas such as 1/2 is larger (approximately twice as large) than 1/4. However, the main way I have used them in class is as quick teaching tools when I student is struggling to comprehend a fraction or is frozen by the concept. \"How many thirds does it take to make one whole? Not sure? Let's go look at our fraction tiles and find out. This is one third. This is two thirds. And three thirds completes the circle. So, how many thirds does it take to make one whole? ... ... Correct. It's three.\"\r\n\r\nI am especially grateful for the tiles during our most recent unit. We've been learning about dividing fractions, and nearly every day I have used the tiles either to help individual students or to visually show the entire class how two different fractions compare. It has been an immensely helpful tool, and the product is well made so I will be able to use these tiles (with greater and greater effect, as I grow in experience and learn what works best) for years and years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1761760055315,"projectUrl":"project/improving-literacy-and-math-skills-in-mr/9863290/","projectTitle":"Improving Literacy and Math Skills in Mr. Fry's Math Class","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Freidel","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10335095"},{"teacherId":3269503,"projectId":9851847,"letterContent":"The new resources have already strengthened both the academic routines and our social-emotional learning environment, cultivating a sense of community and well-being. Our reusable write-and-wipe pockets, dry-erase markers, erasers, and transparent sticky notes have also enhanced daily instruction by making practice activities more interactive and efficient.\r\nStudents were genuinely excited when they first saw the materials, which helps donors see the tangible enthusiasm their support inspires. Many immediately gravitated toward the flexible seating options while the earbuds and camera cases sparked conversations about future projects. Students expressed gratitude to donors for investing in their learning.\r\nCurrently, students are applying these materials in a cross-curricular project that blends literacy, SEL, and STEM, demonstrating ongoing engagement and growth. They are using flexible seating and sensory tools during planning sessions, write-and-wipe supplies for class activities, video reflections, storyboards, and more. As a middle school math classroom, we are constantly working to move students from abstract understanding to visual and spatial reasoning, and these grids have become an essential tool. Students are using them to model coordinate plane concepts, explore slope and transformations, and physically manipulate shapes to better understand area and perimeter. One moment that stood out was during a lesson on reflections and translations — a student who typically struggles with paper-and-pencil tasks was able to correctly model and explain a transformation using the magnetic grid, and you could see their confidence grow in real time.\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, there was an audible excitement in the room. Many immediately wanted to come up and touch and move the pieces, and several commented that it felt like \"doing math with real tools.\" The novelty quickly turned into focused engagement — students were more willing to try, make mistakes, and revise their thinking because the grids made math feel interactive and approachable rather than intimidating.\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using the magnetic grids as we move into systems of equations and geometric modeling. We are beginning a project where students will design and model real-world layouts using coordinate planes, and these grids will allow them to test ideas collaboratively before transferring them to paper or digital formats. Your generosity has not only provided materials, but has created more opportunities for students to engage deeply, build confidence, and experience math as something they can truly explore and understand. But when they are given access to high-interest books that reflect their interests and are relatable, things change. During free-choice reading time, they are no longer being told what to read—they are discovering what they want to read.\r\n\r\nPlacing the right book into a student's hands can be a turning point. High-interest texts lower barriers, increase motivation, and help readers persist even when the text feels challenging. When students are engaged, they read longer, practice more often, and begin to see themselves as readers—not because they have to, but because they want to.\r\n\r\nYour donation made these moments possible. By providing books at no cost, you removed financial barriers and ensured that every student could participate fully in free-choice reading time. The result is more than improved literacy skills—it's the spark of a lifelong love of reading.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our students and for investing in their growth, confidence, and futures. Through Bridge Builders, students are learning essential skills such as engineering design, critical thinking, collaboration, and perseverance. They are practicing how to plan, test, analyze results, and improve their designs using evidence from what worked and what didn't.\r\nIn our classroom, Bridge Builders looks like active, student-centered learning. Students work in teams to design and build bridges, test their strength, and revise their designs based on data and peer feedback. They engage in thoughtful discussions about structure, forces, and materials, while learning how to communicate ideas clearly and respectfully. Failure is treated as part of the learning process, and students are encouraged to problem-solve rather than give up.\r\nSeveral students who typically struggle with traditional academic tasks are especially thriving during this project. These students show strong creativity, leadership, and persistence, often taking on problem-solving roles within their groups. I have seen students who are usually quiet step up to explain their ideas, and others who struggle with writing gain confidence through hands-on success.\r\nYour support didn't just provide materials—it gave students the opportunity to think like engineers, work as a team, and build confidence in their abilities.
