All of the supplies have been welcomed by my middle school students, and I am seeing gains not only in their literacy, but also in their collaboration and communication skills due to these donations to my classroom.\r\n\r\nThe dry-erase pockets and the large magnetic whiteboard surfaces have made the biggest impact in my Spanish classes and Intro to AVID class. The dry-erase pockets have been great for activities in which my students read details about characteristics and can see colorful images that support the text they read. This is so helpful when developing language skills to have a visual that matches what they read. With limits on color-copies I can make, the pockets allowed me to print a class set and allow students to mark the text with dry-erase markers. Additionally, students were able to practice their reading comprehension skills in a low-stress way by using these tools. The large dry-erase surfaces have been especially helpful in my Intro to AVID class as students used them to engage in Tutorials--a collaborative inquiry-based activity that help them solve problems related to college- and career-readiness.\r\n\r\nThe large post-it paper has been wonderful for my Spanish students to work collaboratively and develop their own writing skills as they use them regularly for group projects to record ideas and also write their own descriptions in Spanish. One particular project they were excited about what to create \"Adopt me\" ads for pets that they described in Spanish. Students also really appreciate the ¿Qué tal? magazine subscription as it brings real-life authentic texts right to the classroom.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these materials has been profound in building student confidence, allowing for seamless feedback, and visual tracking of their progress. You have given me the ability (somewhat selfishly) to control what certain calculators are designated for. Far too often, I am forced to have students share calculators or hopefully bring their own. Then, I am forced to try to figure out and teach students how to manipulate their individual calculators. Everybody being on the same page has made everybody's lives easier.\r\n\r\nThe whiteboards are a great addition, too. Allowing students an easy way to collaborate and share responses and thought processes easily, rather than trying to project student work or transferring it manually. My students were quick to point out how much more environmentally responsible using white boards is, something I really hadn't given much thought.\r\n\r\nFinally, the small bags of treats are great reinforcers for kids.
