My students have a wide range of reading abilities, from approximately a 1st-grade reading level to a 5th-grade reading level, while all of them are middle school students. Having access to Holes and The City of Ember will give my students the opportunity to experience engaging, age-appropriate novels while receiving the reading support they need to be successful.\r\n\r\nWe just started reading Holes this week, and my students are already becoming invested in the story and its characters. We are excited to continue exploring the novel together and look forward to starting The City of Ember next semester. Having two full-length novels to look forward to gives my students the opportunity to build stamina and confidence as readers over time.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is much more than simply reading words on a page. As we work through these novels, students practice important skills such as identifying the main idea and supporting details, making inferences, determining the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, summarizing, making predictions, answering text-dependent questions, and supporting their thinking with evidence from the text. We also discuss character development, setting, plot, theme, and how authors use language to communicate ideas. Students are learning that strong readers don't just read the words...they think about what the words mean.\r\n\r\nBecause my students have such varied reading levels, we use a variety of supports to make the novels accessible. We read together, listen to portions of the text, stop to discuss important events and vocabulary, and break longer sections into manageable parts. Students have opportunities to reread, ask questions, discuss their thinking with classmates, and demonstrate their understanding in different ways. This allows students who may struggle with independent reading to participate in meaningful conversations about the same story as their peers.\r\n\r\nEven after just beginning Holes, it has been exciting to see students connect with the story and become curious about what will happen next. As we continue reading, I am looking forward to seeing students make predictions, discuss the characters, and connect events in the story to larger ideas such as friendship, fairness, perseverance, and choices. Next semester, The City of Ember will give us another opportunity to explore new characters, vocabulary, themes, and problem solving concepts.\r\n\r\nFor some of my students, these novels provide something they have not always had in school: the experience of being a real middle school reader. They may need significant support to access text, but they still deserve the opportunity to read stories with age-appropriate characters, themes, vocabulary, and concepts. These books help bridge the gap between their instructional reading levels and their chronological age while building the skills and confidence they need to become stronger, more independent readers.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful to the donors who helped make this possible.
