One standout moment was during a recent student meltdown where he used the sensory toys and visual aids to help breathing techniques and getting his frustration out.\r\nWhen the materials arrived, the students were beyond excited. There were actual cheers when we unboxed everything! One student picked up a book and said, \"We get to keep these?!\" It really felt like a special moment — like the classroom had been transformed just for them. They immediately began flipping through the books and asking if we could start using them that day.\r\nOur social worker will also be using these materials as the next step. The closet has been up and running for several weeks now and families and students within our school community have greatly benefited. \r\n\r\nI wanted to start a care closet to provide basic needs and self care items to students and families in our community. There is a lot of research that shows children who feel comfortable, confident, and have access to resources that ensure their physiological needs are met are more successful accessing learning and within their social and emotional functioning.\r\n\r\nSince the care closet has been filled, students and families have reached out with requests and obtained items to have these basic and self care needs met. The items you funded include but are not limited to lotion, toothpaste, hair brushes, socks, and body wash. All of these items are so helpful and our families and students really benefit from having access to these items. \r\n\r\nWe could not do this without your support. Utilizing a corner within our special education classroom, students are able to experience sensory regulation. This sensory station has had a dramatic impact on our students. The sensory items in the station help individuals manage sensory overload, regulate their emotions, improve the focus, engage in group activities, and de-escalate stress and anxiety prior to learning new concepts or skills. Since 2023, it was our hope to set up an area in our room to help the unique individuals with their SEL, emotions, and regulations. It is so amazing and rewarding to have all of this support from donors in this great project. \r\n\r\nAs multiple sensory pieces had arrived to our classroom, we had began the process of converting the station/area. Students were very interested in helping to create a look to the space. When all the pieces had finally arrived, the students' became very excited as they saw many new pieces added to the sensory station. Many students gravitated to the light switches, blackout tent, and busy box. As more items were added, our students began to enjoy the adjustable height wet/dry bins and our light box. \r\n\r\nFor our students, we have included the sensory station area in our daily schedule to help increase our students' regulated, and focus for learning. The next steps from this project will be to continue to add and/or change out sensory materials on a monthly basis.","fullyFundedDate":1737116359234,"projectUrl":"project/sensory-sensation-station/9052406/","projectTitle":"Sensory Sensation Station","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Desjarlais","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1583765_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1493130466055","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-desjarlais"},{"teacherId":9710034,"projectId":8708809,"letterContent":"Thank you for your contributions to support our new STEM program at Putnam Elementary School. Students at all grade levels were so excited to recieve the new materials and they have been used on a daily basis. The new materials have given my students and I more choice in what we are able to use to create and build in the classroom. \r\nMy students in grades 2-3 have been been working on engineering projects. Second grade has been working to design their dream home, third grade is working on recreating important places in our town's history and fourth grade has been building replicas of bridges from around the country. The cardboard scissors and construction tool kits have been essential tools for us during this process. The students have been able to cut out the necessary pieces of their designs with greater independence thanks to these tools. \r\nMy students in preschool-grade 1 have loved using the duplo race cars on tracks we built with magna tiles and the duplo vehicles through creative play. Vehicles are a high interest for many of the younger students and it has been great to provide students with different kinds of vehicles to play with. All grade levels have had the opportunity to explore and build with the learning gears, keva planks and puzzle blocks. \r\nThank you again for helping increase the choices we have in our classroom for STEM. As we continue to develop our program I look forward to seeing the other creations my students make.","fullyFundedDate":1734632042655,"projectUrl":"project/support-our-new-stem-program/8708809/","projectTitle":"Support Our New STEM Program!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. LaVallee","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9710034_orig.jpg?crop=1500,1500,x0,y45&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724724061544","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9710034"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_40806","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":558,"numTeachers":45,"percentFrplEligible":84,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":72,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":62.3,"schoolId":40806,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Putnam Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Putnam Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/putnam-public-schools/putnam-elementary-school/40806"}
