Many of my 50 Kindergarten students come from low income families, a majority of which are non-English speaking. Unfortunately, many of the families and students in the class do not have books in their homes and do not go to the library. The class is made up of students who are kind, considerate of others, and work hard to learn under the toughest conditions. All of my students are eager to become readers and writers so that they can one day go to college. I consider myself not only a mentor and teacher to my students, but to their parents as well. During our daily read alouds, students listen carefully to hear a new story. Besides listening to the read alouds, students are given the opportunity to listen to books on tape and CD.
