These resources have already made a meaningful difference in both our Cross Country program and PE classes. Students are using the smartwatches to track time, distance, and their progress during runs and fitness activities. This gives them a better understanding of their effort and allows them to set personal goals and see their improvement over time. The muscle rolling sticks are helping students address muscle tightness and knots after physical activity and learn the importance of recovery and taking care of their bodies.\r\n\r\nOur students were excited to see the new equipment and immediately wanted to put it to use. For our Cross Country runners, being able to track their runs makes training more personal and motivating. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks introduces students to the concept of bioethics and medical consent. Through Henrietta's story, we explore the intersections of race, science, and justice, and students are learning how to ask hard questions about scientific progress: Who benefits? Who decides? What is fair?\r\n\r\nWorld Without Fish supports our Earth & Space Science curriculum by blending narrative nonfiction with environmental science. Students are learning to track cause and effect in ecological systems, analyze the role of human behavior in climate change, and draw connections between what they read and what they observe in our Trout in the Classroom tank. They're developing the ability to explain scientific concepts in their own words—an essential NGSS skill.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is a mix of whole-class discussions, small group reflections, and individual journaling. You might walk in and see students in a circle debating whether scientists should be able to use cells without permission, or hear a student exclaim, \"Wait, this actually happened?\" during a read-aloud passage.\r\n\r\nWe read with highlighters in hand and questions on the board. We annotate, challenge assumptions, and share personal connections. For many students, these books are the first time they've seen science presented in such a human way.\r\n\r\nWhat's been most powerful is how different students are connecting with different parts of the texts.
