It has already been a huge success! Students are impressed with the variety of items available, and they're excited that everything is available whenever they need it, no matter who they are. I shared about the care closet with my classes on the first full days of school, and so many students expressed how nice they thought it was. As word spreads, new students come by and express the same sentiments.\r\n\r\nSo far, the snacks and hairbrushes have been a huge hit! Lip balms, braces cleaners/flossers, and drink packets are also popular. I'm working with the school community to spread awareness and increase utilization, but it's already taken off faster than I could have imagined.\r\n\r\nThank you all again for helping make this project come to life! I was very excited about it, and it's one of the things I'm most proud of in my teaching career, and I couldn't have done it without all of you.","fullyFundedDate":1751686127070,"projectUrl":"project/care-closet-for-ba-students/9426665/","projectTitle":"Care Closet for BA Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Burroughs","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6188764"},{"teacherId":9797054,"projectId":8864340,"letterContent":"The grounding mats your donation made possible became an instant curiosity among my students. They were fighting over who got to try them out first after only a sentence of two of explanation from me about what they were!\r\n\r\nOf course, grounding mats normally don't cause an immediate physical sensation for most people (although some do feel a tingling), so what came next was skepticism. I had to take a bit of time and really explain to them the science of grounding, and I provided a few resources so they could research it more deeply. I also sent out a notice to parents in case anyone wanted to opt their child out. Nobody did.\r\n\r\nSo far there have been a few obstacles to these mats being used more often. One is that students have to come up and get a mat from me, find a place to plug it in and get set up...and then do the reverse at the end of class. Sometimes they just don't feel like dealing with it, or they forget. Another is that the best and easiest way to use a grounding mat is with bare feet, and students have expressed a few concerns about this. One is hygiene, obviously. Also, many of them feel self-conscious being barefoot in front of other students, or now that it's winter they don't want to go to the trouble of taking off boots or lace-up shoes and socks. It may not sound like much, but every extra step can be an impediment. Finally, some students have said they simply don't want their feet to be cold. \r\n\r\nThe upside is that I feel like once it gets warmer out and students are wearing flipflops and sandals anyway, the bare feet will become less of an issue. In the meantime, they have taken to unrolling the mat and putting it on their lap, then pressing their free hand down on it (because they need the other one to write). It's not ideal, but it's the best we've figured out so far. The classroom is a challenging environment to try to do this, but I'm determined!\r\n\r\nAs you can see, so far our little experiment has met with mixed success, but I'm optimistic for the spring when the mats will become a bit easier to use. Thank you SO much for making this possible. If we change one life, it will have been worth it.","fullyFundedDate":1728567806511,"projectUrl":"project/earthinggrounding-for-student-wellness/8864340/","projectTitle":"Earthing/grounding for Student Wellness!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parkinson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9797054"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44130","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":572,"numTeachers":70,"percentFrplEligible":27,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":78,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":9,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"8.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":73.4,"schoolId":44130,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bacon Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bacon Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/connecticut/colchester-public-school-district/bacon-academy/44130"}
