In doing so, students will naturally gather a better understanding of typical stories, such as The Hero's Journey. The more students are exposed to storylines such as that, The Three-Act Structure, or Rags to Riches, the better they understand their own stories. By seeing protagonists deal with similar issues, students can better relate to these works of literature and, in doing so, perhaps are better exposed as to how they can handle their own issues when they arise. \r\n\r\nOutside of that, students have found a new peace of mind. As we continue to dive further into the world of technology, students are robbed of opportunities of silence wherein their brains have time to process their own lives. In donating these books and providing them these moments of clarity, I can only assume that my students are finding time to be calm. Whenever silent reading used to happen, within ten minutes, students were restless and ready to move on. Now? The timer goes off, and multiple times I have decided to restart it, solely because, as an English teacher, students asking for more time to read brings joy to my heart and reminds me why I became a teacher in the first place.","fullyFundedDate":1770493327243,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-a-non-library-school/10085212/","projectTitle":"Books For a Non-Library School","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gary","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10429396"},{"teacherId":9504170,"projectId":10086765,"letterContent":"When I first interviewed here, I made note of the fact that I wasn't shown a library. When I arrived a few months later in August, I learned that there wasn't a library at the school, and that the English Department was providing the library experience in the form of small classroom libraries.\r\n\r\nMy planning partners and I work hard to encourage reading during this time where screens seem to dominate the waking life of not only our students, but most adults as well. We can blame the screen addiction on many different factors, but I believe lack of student agency and choice in reading materials is largely to blame. Students no longer fall in love with reading because too often, they are forced to read short texts that favor testing prep. My colleagues and I make sure that this is not the case in our classrooms. We aim to provide student choice in reading in the form of literature circles, book clubs, and independent reading projects. We do this in hopes that we will begin to make reading something kids look forward to rather than dread. \r\n\r\nEach book you have donated has been read by a child in my class or my colleague's classes.
