This technology has given our students an exciting and meaningful way to share their voices with our school community. Our students use the equipment to create a middle school podcast that we share with parents and teachers, giving families a glimpse into what is happening at school. They also use the podcast to provide sports updates, share book reviews, and highlight activities and accomplishments throughout our school.\r\n\r\nThe new equipment has made our students feel like real podcasters and has helped them develop skills that go far beyond simply using technology. Students are learning how to plan and write scripts, speak clearly and confidently, conduct interviews, work as a team, edit recordings, and communicate information to an authentic audience. Some students who may be quieter in the classroom have really warmed up to podcasting because it gives them a different way to express themselves and share their ideas. They are excited to hear their own voices and know that their classmates, teachers, and families are listening.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, this project has helped our students understand that their voices matter. They are taking ownership of the stories they tell and learning how technology can be used to inform, connect, and build community. Through the books we have read this year, students have developed important literacy skills such as summarizing, making inferences, identifying conflict, connecting with characters, and—most importantly—building confidence as readers. These skills have strengthened their comprehension and encouraged them to see themselves as capable, thoughtful readers.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom takes many forms. Students read independently and aloud, pause to discuss texts to deepen understanding, and enjoy the flexibility to read comfortably around the room. This variety has helped foster both comprehension and a genuine love of reading, allowing students to engage with books in ways that feel meaningful and enjoyable to them.\r\n\r\nIt has been especially rewarding to see students connect with our shared texts. Many of my female students were deeply impacted by I Am Malala, as they reflected on her powerful story and the injustices faced by girls in the Middle East. My male students were particularly drawn to the mystery of The Parker Inheritance. All students are eagerly looking forward to beginning Black Ships Before Troy as we transition into our Ancient Greece unit.
