Rick Riordan was an educator and knows how to make books engaging with great character development, rigorous vocabulary, and fun adventures that center around different types of mythology. For every book we read including; Percy Jackson, Magnus Chase, and the Red Pyramid, we do lessons on the background stories for each god or goddess from Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology. Then as we read, we dig into vocabulary, reading myth stories tied to characters in the stories, and create MYP projects based on events in the stories to build comprehension strategies in our readers. \r\n\r\nThe purpose in doing novel studies for struggling readers is to help students grow in their love for reading. The steps to build that love for reading is to do read-alouds with great literature so that students can see correct fluency being modeled, and understand pacing, tone, inflection, and blending multisyllabic words fluidly. This then allows for readers to engage in meaningful conversations about the text and understand complex ideas introduced in the texts. The students are already feeling excitement about reading these books even though we are only a few chapters in and are pushing themselves in the MYP tasks to prepare for summative assessments and standardized assessments. We are again so grateful for your donation and are growing in our love for reading!","fullyFundedDate":1764621121402,"projectUrl":"project/mythology-unit-for-middle-school-student/9871143/","projectTitle":"Mythology Unit for Middle School Students","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roedell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10340034"},{"teacherId":9785540,"projectId":9704658,"letterContent":"When my students first saw the new materials, their excitement filled the room! The dissection trays immediately made them feel like real scientists, ready to carefully explore how living systems work. Each student now gets to participate in hands-on investigations that deepen their understanding of biology and spark curiosity about future STEM opportunities.\r\n\r\nThe race car track and push-and-pull springs have brought our physics lessons to life! Students test collisions, calculate momentum, and measure forces directly, helping them see Newton's Laws in action. These resources have made abstract ideas tangible, connecting math with motion in ways that truly click for them.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be building on these experiences by designing our own mini experiments that combine biology and physics — encouraging students to ask questions, collect data, and think like real scientists.","fullyFundedDate":1759065839219,"projectUrl":"project/forces-at-play-turning-motion-math-an/9704658/","projectTitle":"Forces at Play: Turning Motion, Math, and Biology Into Discovery","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Vrooman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9785540"},{"teacherId":9785540,"projectId":9610575,"letterContent":"My students were so excited when they saw our new materials! The new resources, including whiteboards, microscopes, and lab coats, have allowed us to dive deeper into our science curriculum. We use the whiteboards daily for group work and quick classroom check-ins to ensure students are grasping the material. The microscopes have been especially exciting—students have been using them to closely observe the structures of leaves, helping them understand how photosynthesis works on a cellular level. The lab coats add a special touch, making students feel like real scientists and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning during lab activities.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, their excitement was undeniable. Many rushed to try on the lab coats, thrilled to \"look like real scientists.\" The clarity and quality of the microscopes amazed them, and they were eager to begin exploring. Moving forward, students are using these tools to study leaf structures in more detail. They are working on drawing what they observe under the microscope and using their observations to develop theories on how photosynthesis could benefit habitats with high carbon levels. This hands-on approach has not only deepened their understanding but also sparked a greater interest in scientific inquiry. Thank you again for helping bring this experience to life for our students!","fullyFundedDate":1746785642538,"projectUrl":"project/science-unleashed-giving-students-the-t/9300339/","projectTitle":"Science Unleashed: Giving Students the Tools to Change the World","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Vrooman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9785540"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50117","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":569,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":63,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":33,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":71.8,"schoolId":50117,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mount Garfield Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mount Garfield Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/colorado/mesa-county-valley-school-district-51/mt-garfield-middle-school/50117"}
