Is there anything better than being asked to crash cars together to learn about the science of energy transfer? You made it possible for fourth graders at Lois Lenski Elementary to explore the transfer of energy by crashing toy cars and observing the results of the collision between a moving toy vehicle to a stationary toy vehicle. The students enjoyed selecting and using the cars to practice the scientific method, while exploring how kinetic energy changes with the height of a ramp as the toy cars crash into each other at the bottom of the ramp. Student engagement was high!\r\n\r\nAfter crashing cars, my students built pinwheels to simulate wind turbines as we explored natural energy options. This was the first step in understanding how wind turbines could work to create energy. Our next step was to build wind turbine models from cardboard tubes, card board, and skewers. The turbines had to demonstrate energy, so a cup with marbles was attached to the turbine and a fan was used to simulate wind. Students celebrated success if they were able to raise 3, 4, or 5 marbles with their wind turbines. Students modeled perseverance and problem solving! \r\n\r\nAnd, there's more to come! I can't wait to create realistic fossils with flour dough and the shells and leaves purchased with your donation this Spring! \r\n\r\nIf students develop an interest in science, you can take the credit!
