Your support has already made it possible for us to bring full-length novels into our classrooms, giving students access to an entire book rather than relying primarily on short stories and excerpts. Having class sets of the novel will also allow us to incorporate independent reading into our instruction and provide students with the opportunity to develop stronger reading habits while experiencing the depth and enjoyment of a complete story. We are so thankful for your investment in our students and for helping us expand the reading experiences we can provide in our classrooms.\r\n\r\nMoon Over Manifest will provide our students with an incredible opportunity to strengthen their 7th grade ELA skills while exploring complex ideas and literary elements. Students will analyze the novel's two timelines, 1917 and 1936, and will work to find connections between characters, events, and information from the past and present. They will explore how storytelling, symbolism, figurative language, setting, character development, and point of view contribute to the meaning of a story. Teachers will use whole-class and independent reading, discussions, and close reading to build students' skills. The novel will support Colorado's 7th grade ELA standards by helping students analyze themes, characters, point of view, figurative language, and literary elements while using evidence from the text.\r\n\r\nThe novel will also connect beautifully to our Savvas unit theme, which focuses on how life events help shape our core values and how knowledge and experiences are passed from one generation to another. As students uncover the stories and history of Manifest, they will see how the experiences of previous generations can influence identity, beliefs, relationships, and choices. They will learn that storytelling can preserve history, connect people across time, and help us understand ourselves and others. Having access to the complete novel will allow us to explore these ideas in a much deeper way than would be possible through a short excerpt.
