For the next several months, we will learn \"How the World Works\" as we explore how weather patterns impact plants and our environment. \r\n\r\nWe used the Seasons & Weather Theme Box, meteorologist props, and weather-themed bulletin pieces to launch this unit's hands-on investigations. Students were eager to take turns pretending to be meteorologists, using the props to report the day's weather. The garden play sets will be integrated into dramatic-play centers in the next few weeks as we learn more about plant parts and their life cycles. Once we have an understanding of weather patterns and how they impact the world around us, we'll be ready to investigate our next Unit of Inquiry, \"Sharing the Planet,\" which focuses on how living things depend on each other for survival. The farm activities will help us understand the important role that farmers play in our lives and how we must all work together to protect our planet and its natural resources. \r\n\r\nThank you for supporting my students and helping provide authentic opportunities for my students to think, collaborate, and learn through play!","fullyFundedDate":1761934758014,"projectUrl":"project/playlab-wanted-play-is-the-work-of-chil/9741348/","projectTitle":"Playlab Wanted: Play Is the Work of Childhood. -Fred Rogers","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lindholm","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5545685_orig.jpg?crop=3000,3000,x0,y230&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1756761728736","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5545685"},{"teacherId":5545685,"projectId":9672389,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping bring our Play Lab to life for the kindergarten students at our International Baccalaureate school in Colorado Springs. Because of your generosity, our school now has a child-centered space rich with toy kitchen materials, puppets, dress-up clothes, building materials, and a wide variety of props — tools that students are already using to explore, create, and learn.\r\nWhen I first unveiled the Play Lab, students' reactions were immediate and joyful: wide eyes, eager voices, and hands reaching for costumes and puppets. Several children who are typically reserved began leading scenes and narrating confidently. \r\nA recent visit to our Play Lab illustrated the difference your gifts have already made. After listening to a story in our classroom, a small group of students used props to retell and dramatize Chicken Little. Children took on roles, negotiated who would play which part, and adapted the story when someone suggested a new ending. Through this play, students practiced sequencing, oral language, turn-taking, and empathy — all while deeply engaged and excited.\r\nNext steps: we will continue to integrate the Play Lab into our Units of Inquiry by having students reenact fairy tales such as Cinderella, Snow White, and The Princess and the Pea. We'll use these dramatizations to target learning goals like story structure (beginning, middle, end), character motivation, and expressive language. \r\nYour contributions have given our students more than toys — you have given them a space to practice communication, build confidence, and learn through joyful, meaningful play. The students I teach in the 1st grade (6-7 years old) are still developing their brains, and the use of play is advantageous for their learning. Students loved the dinosaur books! They were really excited to look at different types of dinosaurs that they have never seen before. Along with the dinosaur unit, we used the play-dough to create fossils of dinosaurs.
