They often come ask me for a granola bar when they are still hungry after lunch or didn't bring lunch that day. Students whose families are struggling know I will always have food for them. Students know they can ask for a healthy snack which helps them to focus on their academic work. \r\n We discussed your generosity and how they should please \"pay it forward\" by engaging in random acts of kindness, such as holding a door for another student or person, shoveling snow for an elderly or infirm neighbor, cleaning up trash in public places, like our school parking lot or at the library, reading to their little siblings or cousins, volunteering to babysit for a family who might not be able to afford a babysitter but who would appreciate a night out. We also discussed how when they are adults, they should please think about dropping off a box of granola bars at a school. \r\n We are working hard in English right now and your generous donation lets students know that people, strangers even, believe in their potential and in them. It means a lot. I am so very grateful for your generosity. I lack the words to express my gratitude. I spend so much money on my classroom...just last week, I spent $85 on donuts just to celebrate them and let them know that they are special to me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much. We know students cannot learn when they are hungry. Sadly, far too many students are hungry so that makes learning almost impossible. \r\n Nothing hurts more than hearing a teenager whisper to me, \"Ms. Dewell, do you have any food?\" When they whisper, I know it's because they are embarrassed. That whisper is a signal that they are ashamed that their family can't provide for them. That whisper breaks my heart. It's no child's fault that their family is struggling. They should not have to pay the cost for that financial struggle. \r\n Thanks to your generosity, I never have to turn away a hungry teen. And you have no idea how wonderful that is. \r\n I share with my students that your generosity is because of your deep belief in their inherent goodness and potential as human beings. That strangers are supporting them, cheering for them and rooting them on. I also teach my students that we should all try to pay forward your generosity, whether shoveling snow for an elderly neighbor, dropping off snacks to a school when they are an adult, buying a Christmas gift for a needy child, or befriending someone who needs a friend, right here at school.
