Students loved chatting while they were building, but they were actually discussing what each part of a neuron did as it's main function. \r\n\r\nWhen I told students they were going to make their own neurons and didn't need to provide the materials, many were surprised and excited! The variety of beads, pipe cleaners, and styrofoam balls were a big hit! They especially like wrapping the myelin sheath with Saran wrap!\r\n\r\nStudents were super creative with colors, size, length, etc. and each group had a unique neuron, which represents one of the over 10 billion neurons in our brain. The mood was positive and fun and as I rotated around to each group, they were able to describe everything about the neuron and it's processes. We displayed them and some even made the \"Wall of Fame\" as the best neurons in the class.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for providing this great hands-on learning opportunity for my AP Psychology students: truly an activity they will remember!","fullyFundedDate":1732645824225,"projectUrl":"project/making-neurons-fun-as-well-as-hygiene/8544737/","projectTitle":"Making Neurons Fun! Students have mentioned many times that they feel safe, peaceful, and provided for when they come to class. With the floor cushions, we sit in circles more and read together more often. Students also spread out in the class more during independent work time. The individual dry erase boards have proven effective during brainstorming sessions, group projects, and small group feedback sessions. My students seem happier and more relaxed in my room with the fake plants and twinkle light atmosphere. I'm so grateful! The supplies donated through Donors Choose allowed for groups to have meaningful conversations while building, creating, and exploring. \r\n\r\nOne group of students particularly has enjoyed the puzzles as we sit and discuss the benefits of persevering and productive struggle. The puzzles were just a way to keep hands busy at first, but slowly became a beautiful metaphor for the productive struggle that students experience in various ways in academic and personal circumstances. The same was true for students who came into my office to play with a few LEGOs and ended up having really powerful conversations about course selection and scheduling for their next semester.\r\n\r\nI'm looking forward to a \"Paint and Ponder\" conversation series I've scheduled in January with the watercolor supplies as I work with students to look at various career surveys and selection tools as they look at what to do with their futures after high school.","fullyFundedDate":1727462960348,"projectUrl":"project/support-for-gifted-learners/8578230/","projectTitle":"Support for Gifted Learners","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Rose","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9633660"},{"teacherId":9233382,"projectId":8576765,"letterContent":"It's so important to have the technology we need to keep students engaged, and this donation has helped two of my classes immensely. So thank you so much for helping to make this year successful!\r\nFirst of all, this is the first year that our students have not been allowed to have cell phones out during the school day, and so we needed a replacement for when we need to record interviews. The class that this helps is journalism because they produce the school newspaper and need to conduct so many interviews. We decided to order voice recorders, and these have been so helpful. Students have a hard time writing down everything in the interviews they do, so these small little devices really help them to accurately capture what is being said. It seems to make the process more fun, and that keeps them engaged.\r\nThe second piece that is really going to help is the Photo Display, and this is going to be great for the CTE Photo classes when we get to commercial photography and need to have a nice, clean background. With CTE classes, we really try to get students real-world applications, and this equipment is so necessary to make the experience memorable.
