These hands-on tasks give students a chance to practice following directions, organizing materials, working carefully, and completing a job from start to finish.\r\n\r\nThe students have been excited to use materials that look and feel like the things they may see in real workplaces. These activities make our lessons feel more meaningful because students can see how the skills connect to jobs in restaurants, hotels, and other community settings. We will continue building these task boxes and using them throughout the year to increase independence, work stamina, and confidence. Students are learning about cooking, cleaning, budgeting, banking, home safety, sewing, basic repairs, and what it takes to live more independently. We are also using the books to practice reading directions, learning new vocabulary, following steps in order, solving problems, and talking about what students may need to know as adults.\r\n\r\nReading looks different for each student in our classroom. Some students read the text on their own, while others use pictures, examples, and teacher support to understand the ideas. Even when a student cannot read every word, the books help start conversations and give us ideas for hands-on lessons. The sewing kit and tool kit have made this even more meaningful because students can practice skills they are reading about, such as using basic tools, measuring, making simple repairs, and learning basic sewing skills.\r\n\r\nSeveral students especially enjoy looking through the cooking, home care, and repair books. They like seeing how everyday tasks are done and connecting the pictures to things they have seen at home or in the community.
