Students also used the book to work on their wiring skills. They completed an essay and answered higher level questions using text evidence and reasoning to defend their claims. They also compared and contrasted this book with a book they read earlier in the year. Students enjoyed both books, but at the end of the day, El Deafo came out the challenge winner! The students would like you to know that they highly recommend both books to readers of all ages. \r\n\r\nThese books were used in small groups with challenged and reluctant readers. In most cases, none of these kids has been willing to read and finish a book all year, but they gobbled these two books up and read them cover to cover. The conversations were rich and meaningful, and they learned a lot about why people do the things they do, how young people can face challenges and make decisions in the face of those challenges, and how to make the hard choices when they have to in their own lives. \r\n\r\nThe rich discussions in small group turned into wonderful argument essays. Students learned how to write introduction and conclusion paragraphs. They also learned how to strengthen their body paragraphs by providing context for their text evidence from the book. Finally, we introduced the idea of counter argument. Students learned the importance allowing the opposing argument to feel heard while maintaining and defending their own ideas. \r\n\r\nYou have helped provide a positive and collaborative learning experience for everyone who participated in this book experience.
